What I'm referinf to is that if you have an image of a know RPD and an image with the same date, crop and size accordingly and check to see if you overlay match the know one. That is the way I use the overlay idea. No need to compare it to a normal coin. You want to match it to a known coin from that die image.

Coop, that is exactly what I have in mind. I guess the FE. and IHC cents are just another kind of cent, IE, all rules apply. BTW, I did another overlay, last night, and kept having trouble, until I decided to try doing things a bit differently. By that, I mean do this to one, but not the other, (flatten image. Then i began having results.
Rock, if you find that the images are "locked", and can't do anything with them, that is probly where you are going wrong, at least theat is what I did. Just flaten the one image, and slide the other on top. If you like what you see, FLATTEN it!

The whole purpose of overlays in coins is to take two coins you think may be from the same die and compare them. It does no good to take a 'normal' coin and compare it to a possible die variety, because key elements and markers will definitely be different.

Thanks

Chuck,
I emailed you but in the meantime I figured it out. I practiced a few times and I believe I've got it. I will learn all the other "fun" things I can do with the program over time but for now I can do an overlay when I need it. Thanks for offering to help.
