I know its an old version but thats all I could get for now..it was free. I've never used photoshop before so it's all foreign to me and I really want/need to learn how to do the overlays. I found an older post by Coop on the subject but for some reason it was hard for me to follow it. Does someone have a step by step procedure for photoshop dummies written down that they could post or email me?
any help is gratly appreciated
Rock

ok, I'll take tackle this one question at a time.
1. I've opened up an image in photoshop. It seems to default as the Background image in the layers pallette. Thats good.
Now I want another image to overlay with so I go to file..open...select another image and open. Now I have 2 images open and whichever one I click on thats the one that becomes the background.
Question.
How do I get one image to be the background and another image to be a layer? I can't figure that part out.
Thanks
Rock

Rock, we must wear the same size shoe! I have the same problem, and Coop gave mt the answer. he made a step-by-step set of instructions for doing exactly what you are asking for. I'll locate it, and email it to you. I need your email addy, (QTH).

thanks Dick. got the email.
I must have a different or older version because it's not working. I can can 2 images up, make one a background. By accident I made one a layer, but I still can't get them on the same pallette. It's like they're open in 2 seperate programs. One image is completely autonomous from the other. I know this probably doesn't make sense, but it's my big road block. I tried double clicking on the image..nothing. There is no little box on the bottom of the images to click. When I click on the make new layer icon on the right side, a blank layer is created. I tried dragging the image onto thata but that doesn't work.
How do I get 2 images on the same pallette to work together?
Frustrated at my self right now for not being able to figure out what is obviously simple.

Rock, "been there, done that"!!!
Maybe Coop will chime in and tell you where you "missed the boat"! I was luicky to just do as he said, and got one to work. He uses ver 5.0, or maybe 5.5. I only have the ver 7.0. The offer still stands.

Rock, don't give up! It is NOT simple! You are not the first to have problems with this, and definitely will NOT be the last! It takes PATIENCE,and a full vocabulary of nice things to say, while working with it. Wink I finally got it, and I know you will too!

Bob, can you delete this, and the "delete" as well. I can't get the "delete" to work. thanks,

Dick

Here are a couple of tags that might help to get familiar with Photoshop.
Basics on how to use the program:

Overlays:

Grid (Actually tiles as the grid you can use on images, but you can't save them with the grid. But using the tiles option you can save the images with the grid (tiles) showing. great for side by side comparisions of two or more coins.

Out of round images, how to fix, other suggestions

Cooop, like Photoshop, it is how you look at it. It is not always what it seems! I believe Rock will get the "hang of it", and enjoy working with PS.
Talking about overlays; How useful would they be on FE, and IHC attributions? Could they be relied on?

Not sure what your are trying to match up? RPD could be over layed with two images. Doubled dies can be over layed. You just need something to size the image with to get them the same width and then adjust the image size so both are the same and overlay one over the second one making a layer. Die abrasion also can be checked to see if it is a cleaning/polishing issue or a doubled die. The field is limited to what you can think of to identify.

Coop, I figured that the "normal" dated coin could be used for an overlay, to confirm an RPD, if it were very minor, vut More in confirming a KNOWN snow #, with a doubtful one. Then the overlay would be handy, providing no RPD's were involved, because of the variation in position. Not like the zincolns. As far as the DDO/DDR's, they could be overlayed, and with some degree of confidence, that it would be correct.
I keep confusing the issue, thinking the "hand-pinching od the master die, amd the "working die, which is "fixed" all elements relation with each other. It takes a while to think from the working die stand-point, rather than the "punching stand-point. It takes a while!....
