I have a Cannon Powershot A1000 IS. Other than the standard setting of setting macro on and turning the flash off, can any one recommend any other setting I may want to set on this camera to get the most out of it while photographing coins. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Dave, Other than just practicing with other settings, I might suggest that you adjust the 'White Balance' if it has that setting. This setting will definitely affect the color on your coin photos. Minute differences can be edited with decent editing software. Will you be shooting pics through a scope, loupe, or magnifying glass?

ROFLMAO.... sorry about that, but I am lucky I can photograph the coins at all never mind using a scope, loupe or magnifying glass. What is even funnier, is I can go out side into my garden during the summer, take outstanding photos of butterflies, bees, etc on my roses or really outstanding photos of my roses and other flowers that I grow heck I have even had offers from people to buy the enlargements I have on my walls of them (always turn them down though), but when it comes to coins. Wow, its like the twighlite zone for me.

on my power shot A720IS i go to the menu ->converter->and choose either the TC-DC58N or the 250D as a converter.i think this may force the camera into a better macro mode (regardless) if the physical lens (converters)are added are not.seems to work for great me. even though i have the TC-DC58N a (2X telephoto lens) i don't always use it physically attached to the camera itself.i do however seem to be able 'make best use of the camera's macro abilities' through adjusting it's settings in this way.
