UNITED STATES HALF CENTS

Deluxe edition, 1962. Empire Coin Company, Inc. Johnson City, NY
47 pages, est. price $20.00

by Q. David Bowers and James F. Ruddy
coppercoins.com rating :

This book is more of a reference pamphlet than a book. It still contains a quick and accurate reference for those not wanting to wade through a large publication. It does however, lack certain information to make it an invaluable reference source.

AMERICAN HALF CENTS - The Little Half Sisters

Second edition, first printing January 1982. Wigglesworth & Ghatt Company, Arlington Virgina
131 pages, est. price $35.00

by Roger S. Cohen, Jr.
coppercoins.com rating :

This book remains the original work for half-cent research, but the new Manley book is just too good to want to use this book for attribution. This book is still a must to complete a library of half-cent works.

THE HALF CENT DIE STATE BOOK 1793-1857

First edition 1998.
300 pages, retail price $75.00

by Ronald P. Manley, Ph.D.
edited by J. R. "Bob" Grellman, Jr.
coppercoins.com rating :

WOW, if you are into half-cents this book is absolutely impossible to live without. The pictures are all 2 to 3 inches in diameter and very clearly shot. Attribution has never been easier. This work contains all recent discoveries since the Cohen book. You will be disapointed no matter what the cost for this book!

COPPER QUOTES BY ROBINSON

16th edition, July 31, 1998. Jack H. Robinson, P.O. Box 9426 McLean, Virginia 22101.
119 pages, est. price $25.00

by Jack H. Robinson
coppercoins.com rating :

This book is more of a price guide pamphlet than a book. It contains a reasonably current value for all Cohen, Sheldon and Newcomb number early copper. The only drawback with this publication is the fact that it is subject to market swings as are all price guides. Just make sure you grade copper the EAC way and not by normal grading standards and you will not be disapointed. Jack does give a complete rundown on early copper grading and standard practices to help the novice.

PENNY WHIMSY

second edition, 1958. Harper and Row Publishers, New York, Evanston and London.
350 pages plus 51 plates, est. price $50.00

by Dr. William H. Sheldon
with the collaboration of Dorothy I. Paschal and Walter Breen
coppercoins.com rating :

This is the quuintisential large cent variety indentification guide for 1793-1814 large U.S. cents. Although over the years Dr. Sheldon's ethics have come into question his book still remains the cornerstone of early cent identification. This book is only surpassed in its usefullness by the new Noyes book set. I still use my Sheldon book almost every day though. Sheldon is also credited as the father of the modern 70 point coin grading system and was also a pioneer in the rarity vs. value of coins as it relates to market value.

UNITED STATES COPPER CENTS 1816-1857

1986 edition. Sanford J. Durst, Numismatic Publications, New York, NY.
284 pages plus 11 plates, est. price $50.00

by Howard R. Newcomb
coppercoins.com rating :

Newcomb's book picks up where sheldon's book leaves off, we found this book very difficult to use, especially on lower grade coins as there are very subtle differences with many of the Newcomb varieties. It still remains an exceptional source for the later large cent varieties.

Attribution Guide for United States Large Cents 1840-1857

Second edition, 1987, privately printed.
300 pages, est. price $125.00 (Out of Print)

by J.R. Grellman and Jules Reiver
coppercoins.com rating :

This review was done by a guest of coppercoins.com... If you collect late date large cents - This is your "must have" reference book. Jules Reiver developed the late date large cent variety identification based on date placement in relation to the obverse figure, but J. R. (Bob) Grellman developed this method to an "art". Each variety listed individually on a page with a large pictorial indicating minute die "errors" needed to determine specific variety. Text supports pictorial by clearly explaining these "errors" on both the obverse and reverse to include known census as of date published. Book can be described more as a work of love, than merely documenting information and could have easily established a Grellman numbering system versus Newcomb's numbering system. Author chose not to do so. Mr. Grellman anticipates publishing an updated edition by 2003.
