I'm still curious why the date was part of the working hub. I need to research this further and see if the coin was issued only in 1869? As I'm familiar with Heaton mint coins from Canada, it's interesting how this one has a similar struck quality (aside from the DDO and trails of course) 
As an update, the coin arrived in the mail yesterday. BJ Neff, thanks so much for looking at the coin and providing your written attribution too--that was incredibly helpful! I have to admit, it's pretty interesting to have the earliest known trail dies.  I'll keep looking! |

| Mint marks are added to coins here when the dies are sent to the different mints pre 1989. So it might had been a common practice there as well. | |

| Very nice coin and congrats on discovering such an interesting variety. Thank you for sharing it with us. As far as the lobster/deer part, it apparently is a deer. I was curious and googled around and found this page.

And why the star and deer head is not doubled is a mystery too. Maybe it was added seperately. From what I gather, there were 2 mints, one in Paris and one in Birmingham. Each one had different mint marks. Paris had a bee and an anchor, while Birmingham had the star and deer head. Maybe coins were prepared with the basic design 1st then sent to the different mints where the symbols were added later. But that doesn't really make any sense either. All I know is that it's a nice coin and now I'n even more curious about trails and what causes them. I guess any coin is subject to the anomoly. Rock |

| Nice coin Kurt, I can eliminate the rock lobster( or spiny as they are sometimes called, they grow no claws ). It does resemble the Pampas deer native to that area, whose antlers grow almost straight up with intermittent tines. | |

No, I'm not sure it's a "deer head"...it could be a "rock lobster" for all I know! However, based on what I see elsewhere I'd expect some doubling on these two marks if they were hubbed at the same time.  Let's see what others think. |

Are you sure it's a deer head? It and the star don't look doubled but probably need to compare them to another coin to be sure. I wonder if all of these have that same mark.  |

I just noticed this post! Thanks so much for looking at the coin, and I'm just a little thrilled I have the earliest known trail die.
That jumped out to me too as I inspected the coin.  The star and deer head appear to be added after the hubbing of the die, as they show no doubling? I wondered if they were some sort of privy or mintmark, but the "H" on the reverse appears to be that already. |

| Yes, the coin does have trails and it is the oldest coin to have this type anomaly.
