That's what I'm seeing - a die crack.

Hi - just finished looking at the close ups of this die on the other site. This is not a trail die for it involves just a single, strong line element on a design feature. If it were a trail die, other lines would be present in the surrounding design features.

As for the exact cause, a number of possibilities come to mind. However, it does appear to be a die break at least to me.

Thanks a lot guys! I agree it did not look like a trail but since I haven't been able to get a consensus on what it is ... then someone mentioned trail die ... then I came across traildies.com which brought me to this forum ... figured someone on here would be able to rule out it being a trail Smile Thanks again for the fast responses!

I think that it may be all or partly caused by a worn die.

Smile

Welcome aboard!

I have "trails" on some of my cents, and they look nothing like the "tail" on your "S". ( take it any way you want). IMHO, it is not a trail, and the one who could make a more conclusive statement on that is BJ Neff. He is the authority. I will say that it is very different than any dime I have seen.
The link makes for an interesting "read". thanks for sharing.
BTW, welcome to the forum!! You will find many answers to your questions.

Hi, new the forum which I saw when I went to traildies.com .... I posted these pics in a few other forums and consensus it it's not a die gouge, die break, die crack or clash .. maybe a Trail Die?

Not sure how to get the pics on here .... they can be seen at my post on coinauctionshelp.com (Great site and forum BTW!!)
