On copper coins you list the 1997 double ear in ms65 as 60 dollars. Ken Potter sells ms65rd for 145 dollars. what does the red book price say I do not have a current copy.

The "Red Book" does not have a price listed for this variety, nor does the PCGS price list. This is not unusual though for only the most popular are listed (1983 DDR, 1984 Doubled ear, 1995 DDO) in these guides.
As far as the price variations, it is basically supply and demand and what you, the collectors, are willing to buy a certain die for.
My personal preference is to find the newer dies (from the 1960's forward) and to buy the older ones.
That is one of the best reasons to keep coppercoins as a place to frequently visit, for not only does it have great information with pictures to verify your finds, but also a price guide for the various variety dies. To bad that this is not done for all denominations and maybe, someday, it will.
Hope that this helps.

well I am sure we all know about the big contreversy over the double ear. I myself have seen over 50 of the coins when they first came out. The man that originally found and reported this coin was a man named Larry Philbrick ( God rest His soul). He was a very very good friend of mine. I was there at His house when He discovered it. I thought it to be a remarkable find. The double ear I would say is a coin that did not get the proper attribution that it deserved.

One of the original coins that was found was sent to the mint and like always they said because of the single squeeze it could not be doubling. Imagine the mint making a mistake or admitting to it.

I did forget to memtion that there is one other guide that does list prices of varieties andd that is the "Cherry Picker's guide" by J.T. Santon and Bill Fivaz. Oddly enough, the controversy is brought out in this book for the 1997 doubled ear is thought to be a well placed die chip?
I disagree with this attribution for the ear is not the only place that shows true doubled die characteristics; there are places on the beard that also show the doubling anomaly.
That is an interesting story of how you were there for the finding of this die and hopefully you have one. I have been luck enough to have found four so far while searching through circulated rolls.

Seems like nobody is questioning that one anymore.
It's not in the Red Book because it's still minor compared to the big ones they list.
I've seen some sell recently ungraded AU-UNC for about $30-50 and a graded 65RD might be $75-100
Now with a lot of new ones of similar strength single squeeze DDOs being discovered I'm guessing the 97 won't go higher. To me a lot of these 06-Ps are similar in strength and fairly plentiful. Good stuff for looking for but not like finding a big 72 or 83 or 55.

yes I have one and I am selling it on ebay. not the grade I want so I shall sell the one I have till I can afford the grade of the coin I want. At the time He discovered the coin I wasnt big into it so the ones I found I sold to Him. heck that was years ago wish now that I had kept all the ones that I did find.
And as far as a well placed die chip goes.... then how does a die chip get on the coins in the exact place.(maybe I am not thinking die chip). and if it was a die break as some have said to then why doesnt it show progressions and not the same. I for one having seen probably more of the coins then anyone can say without a doubt it is a true double die. But who knows some might think that I am not an impartial judge
