reprocessed what is that?
You know Im starting to think gramps didnt know much about Coins.
I know, I know next to nothing. His collection was 90% art medals, and 10% coinage. The art medals have sold for thousands each, which is nice because I didnt want them anyway. But as I go through his coinage..., everyones telling me Cleaned or reprocessed or not what he had it marked at. IF he was so good with the Art medals (Grading + ID'ing) , why was he SO bad at the coinage? Everything seems to be "Off" some how.
When I got the collection and started selling it. I reasearched studied and learned everything I could about the art medals. It was easy. But then they are either worth something or not worth anything.. very little grey area.
As I FELL in LOVE with the penny, I have learned there are grey area's, red area's, black area's... even a little purple area.
Alas I will go back to selling the rest of the art medals and just sit and study the coinage and learn all I can.

Reprocessed - plated in zinc by a third party outside the mint. This was done to "re-shine" the coins after they had been in circulation for a while. They are often sold to unsuspecting new collectors as uncirculated. Because they were plated they have no numismatic value.

Often replated ones look nice but the clues are:
They look too shinny and don't have that satiny look or normal flow lines. They lack any sign of toning or whiteish corrosion that's on most steel cents. Sometimes there's dirt or corrosion and they plate over it so it might look bumpy. Sometimes they have a slight blueish look or rainbow look. Often they look doubled at the date or mintmark because that replating seemed to accumulate around those areas. Often the cheek looks a bit flat because steel cents wear slower so often they were nice but circulated with just a bit of zinc wearing off from the high spots then replated so they look shiny with a flat cheek.

Catherine, you, like me, are in the best group in the world, when it comes to information. Your '43 cents are like three I got from a coin company ad, and were part of the total order. They plainly stated they were three mints, "REPROCESSED", and look very nice. Until I received them I didn't know what a "repro" was! I have received some very much alike, that I thought were BU. Now I have to go back and look again. If any are that way, I have a hunch they will replace some memorials, pulled from the batch, as keepers! Dick

HOW do I delete the extras? It took so long to post, I thought it was "hung up", and tried again, then found a bunch of extras! Dick

In order to delete a post you need to do it right after you post before someone else posts after you on the right upper corner on the message screen. I don't think you can do it after someone else posts. Just that one window to delete. You can always go back to edit your post in case you make an error on the post. But the delete only works before someone else posts.
