just bought a 1961 proof unopened mint set

Not too crazy.

At the least you get almost an ounce of silver.
When you get it look at the cent. Every 1961 proof cent I ever saw has the nibble out of the top of the 6 from a hub break. Some also have that break plus doubling on the top of GOD listed as 1-O-II in Wexlers old book.

I hope it's in the original package and envelope.

I had some sets since I got em in the 70s-80s but I thought "who needs these boxes and envelopes" now I realize they sell for a bit less without that stuff.

this is the set that is suppose to have the hald dollar double die in it. it says it is unopened and his feed back is 99.9. so you think I should open it?

Statisticaly it's like a penny you find, you look but they are most often just regular ones.

I recently read this guide on ebay, the writter has some good cautions on sealed 50s-60s sets. He says most have been steamed opened and checked let's hope it's not as bad as he claims but he has good points to make.

I'd look but I would steam it open so you still have the undamaged envelope and not open the inside plastic bag unless I saw something amazing. Being in the plastic bag keeps them nicer than flips.

I also believe that someday there might be a better value for un-broken up proof sets (today it makes little differance). Just because so many people open them, maybe someday when most are already opened it will matter.

I saw that 92-D close AM sell on ebay a few months back...

It was graded (I think au with corrosion) and the most ugly cent you can imagine, stained, corroded and looked like the junk I find in fast food parking lots but still went for a fortune.

IMNSHACO (in my not so humble and cynical opinion) there's completely, absolutely, positively, 100% no such thing as an "unopened" proof or mint set. It's WAY to easy to steam them open and reseal the envelope.

If my information is correct the mint and proof sets of the days were barely seald so if its stuck real good its prob been steamed. I got a sealed box of 20 1963 mint set that were still sealed in the delivery box awhile back and the envelope were barely sealed if they were at all so. But who knows what time and moisture can do

Ain't no such animal! If you got it from the mint, and it was sealed, maybe it ain't so, but! I open every one, because I Also check to see what the individual coin values are. That is why I, and others cut out a single coin from the mint, or break open the proof sets. In fact, not long ago, I opened a 1980-S proof set, because the top of the dime had a very clear "struck thru" from the forehead to the back of the hair. I have the same situation on a 2005-S proof. The oxen have something "struck thru" going from the right shoulder of the near ox, up and over to the off oxen's rump. My advice: OPEN IT! It is always a proof set. You may find a nice surprise. Then maybe not. Your call.

Darrel, I hope you don't feel offended, but If you don't have a coin evaluating guide of some sort, you are going to pay too much. I do, and am aware of it. It pays to know with whom one deals. If it is one you need for a filler, or whatever, to make a complete set, the extra cost is warranted, bucause as time gioes by, you slowly get a return on the over pay.
