Cooking wheats, and other copper

The following is from CD, and I pass it on to you, with my blessing.
This is generally directed to all who have the same need as many of us have had, ( still do), for the proper preparation of the cents, for viewing. CD says use a pewter double boiler, about half full of water, or enough to fully cover the coins. You will need some bi-carbonate of soda. Get the water boiling, and then put in the coins. Then add a couple tablespoons of the baking soda. Let boil for three to five minutes, ior until you have had enough! There should be some greeish foam, indicating the coins are being relieved of the crud. Then place the kettle in the sink, and add two droplets of dishwashing detergent. Rinse well. Remove the coins from the holder , and rinse with warm water, to remove the soap, and film from the carbonate of soda. Then place the coins on a dry towel, and use a washcloth balled up to spread the coins to dry. Leave them drying an hour, at least. The time will depend on the general humidity in your home. Some rules apply:
1. DO NOT use aliminum.
2. Not ecommended for other than copper coinage.
3. Pay attention! The coin you ruin might be just the one you were looking for! Happy cooking, and good hunting!

A little addendum to Dick's noble attempt to spread the word.

1. I use a porcelain coated double boiler bought at K-Mart for $18. I don't use pewter. I did say to make sure it's not aluminum.

2. Since my double boiler has an inner screen that I can pull the coins out and drain the water, I don't use the detergent in the same water I boiled the coins in. I drain off the water and use clean water in the sink with a couple of drops of detergent to rinse the coins...something like washing dishes and the rinse side of the sink.

Got a question Chuck,

Have you decided what the best amount of coins works best?

Mike, he suggests 5-8 rolls. I tried it the first time, and with 5 rolls. Only thing I used a SS screen, and a pewter pot! Now I'll make another trip to see if I can find a K-mart! Walmart has a lot, but not necessarily what I was looking for. Forgot the detergent, too!
Later on....
I'll be returning the nest of screens, and also the Large basket, for a refund. This time my wife will do the shopping! She read CD's post, and said , "I told you that was wrong"! I should listen to her a lot more, especially after 52 years! Well I did get the right baking soda....

Dick: that story reminded me of the Resturant that had to close down cause someone lost the recipe for Ice tea.

My wife and kids have declared me certifiably insane. Today I used the method described here to clean about 2000 pennies. My wife said she didn't know I could cook.

I also added a step at the end. I dried my pennies with a hair dryer. I am a very impatient penny searcher.

I never wash them but....

I recently searched a lot of circ wheats and after finishing I washed my hands but then I smelled my hand and it still smelled like the wheaties, washed 3 times and still smelled like wheaties! Maybe next time I'll try washing the pennies first.

I bet the pot won't be fit for human use after being used, I'll have to find a sacrificial pot and try it.
