One can never see enough images of the King of Kings - really nice die variety, and a nice coin you have to boot. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you Chuck, I love that coin. I believe the reason I am not getting good photos of the obverse is the position of the coin in the holder. The NGC holders appear to be thicker and the coins generally are not centered in the space. In this case the reverse is closer to the clear cover than the obverse. So it is not easy to get the 60x images focused.

My hat is off to you oreville, that is a great coin you have. I think the 1955 looks especially remarkable in full red. How long have you had it?

I need to get a better picture of mine. Mine has alot of blue highlights that are difficult to capture in a photo.

Garry: I have had this coin since 1997. It is in a PCGS MS-65RD holder, slabbed in 1996 and untouched since then. I have never seen a nicer one than this one.

Mine is the second I have owned. My first was a MS62BN that I paid $700 for in 1996. In 1998, I traded in that one for my present example. That cost me $1,700. The MS65RD examples have jumped in price since then. I dont know how old you are, but in the mid 1960's my mom used to take us to downtown Chicago to see a movie. There was a coin shop on Dearborn Street at the train station and that was when the lucite paperweights with the floating pennies were popular. I can remember seeing a poster with a picture of a coin like yours and the asking price was in the hundreds. That was alot of money then.

Though I would like to have a red one, I like mine because of the blue highlights.


It would be interesting to see some 60x pictures of the reverse of yours to see the die lines west of the "T" in CENT. Here is my photo. Note the arrows for the location of the die lines.

Garry: I am 50 years old.

I have about a dozen of these 55 DDO's. Mostly AU range and two Uncs plus this one. I bought my first one in 1967 when I was 14 years old. I did lots of yard work and bought one for $15. I had it slabbed many years later in a ANACS holder. It is an MS-60.

I adored those doubled dies and dreamed about being in the manhunt for them back in the 1950's. I got to live through a piece of such manhunt when I was at the epicenter of the manhunt for the 1972 DDO cents, my second favorite date doubled dies.

I will check the die markers to the west of the T in cent.

GarryN; Sorry for taking so long to respond. I couldn't remember where this thread was!!

Now that is a lovely deeper red 72DDO cent you have there. Strong for the assigned grade as well.

Well, those 72DDO's I am wild about. I have put together a grading set of these from MS-63 to 67RD. I now have about 30 of them. Can never have enough of the 72DDO's!

I fouund 7 of them in August 1972 in New York City.

Thats great Oreville, a grade set, what an accomplishment! The 67 must be among the finest known? or is there a 68? I saw my first red brown 72 DDO last yr at the MidAmerica Coin expo, if the dealer has it again this yr I may buy it, it had some great colors in it and was certified, MS64.

I believe there is now 1 or 2 MS-68RD NGC/PCGS 1972 DDO. I have not seen them to comment one way or another.
