Fun Bag of Wheats

Recently, a friend of a friend decided he wanted to sell off a hoard of wheat pennies let to him by his grandfather. I managed to get hold of a couple of bags. I'm still going through the first bag. Wow. The first thing that really jumped out at me was a 1920 in about MS64-65. It has beautiful blue/purple toning. Here are of some of the other highlights so far;
EF 1944D-1OM-002
AU 1956D-1MM-008
MS65 RB 1938D. I have not been able to nail this one down. It has an RPM somewhat like a 1938D-1MM-002, and the reverse appears to be a combination class 6 + class 2 doubled die. It is very much like the reverse of the 1938P-1DR-001. Since it has the characteristics of a class 2, it has me stumped. I have sent it to CD for attribution. I'm looking forward to hear what he has to say about it. I'll be sure to post the results later.

It's always nice to find some good coins to start with, and your list is an impressive one already. Keep us informed of your finds...OK?

Wow. What started out as an exciting search went downhill. I'm sure that others with more experience would have found more interesting varieties, but the rest of this bag turned up very little of interest. I did find a 1957P-1DO-002 in VF, and a 1957D-1MM-001 in VF, and that's about it. At least I have another bag to go through. Maybe some more gems will turn up from it. One thing that I thought would be worth sharing; a friend that got one bag from this hoard found a 1944D-1OM-002 that is nearly the twin of the one I found. Both of these have nice even color and wear. Even though the rest of my first bag was dissapointing, the fact that he found another nice OMM is encouraging. No word yet on the 1938D.

I have had streaks like that too. I find great stuff for a while, then nothing! Ultimately, you can't make a determination on the overall success of the search until you search them all. Either way, you have made some nice finds already.

In normal circulated Cents I may find something and about 10 rolls later I may find something or find two in the same roll. Its just a copper lottery. If they are there and your not too drunk to see them, there are items to catch everyones interest.

Here is my attempt at photos of the coins I mentioned above. While my photography skills lack polish, I think I managed to catch the important details.
I tried to capture the toning of this 1920. I was partially successful. Far from a perfect coin, it's still pretty nice to be in a bag of circulated wheats.
