Anyone know of any artical on where I can read about why they plated some post 1982 coins with brass instead of copper.
I have a few 83s that are brass plated and know that some 85s, 86s, and some in the 90s were done this way.

Look at Ken Potters page, he tells which "Coin World" had articles about it.

I also remember when they first came out there were ads for them that said the mint had the brass plated planchets to make some sort of tokens on and by accident used them for cents. That seems odd since if it was the case it seems unexplainable that they did it on several years. Maybe the article tells.

I've always wondered if the plating involved 2 steps. A brass layer and a copper layer? I know for Chrome plating a multi-step process is used. If some didn't get the second plating of copper it would explain how this happens. No facts, just an obversation or a possible explaintion. Idea Idea Idea

Coop, I can't find anything to confirm that theory... one page did say that the zinc planchets are plated with 7.5 microns of copper at the center and twice that (15 microns) at the edge.

In other words take the plating off the edge of 66,667 or the center of 133,334 cents or and stack them, you'll get a stack an inch high.

I have seen a few that I thought were issues with toning. Maybe I was wrong. This 1997D next to a 2005D shows a brassy tone to it but I still don't know if it is environmental or not.

Steven, that's one of the 90s that was brass plated, hang on to that one, that's in in good shape, and I think the 97s are the hard ones to find............ Shocked

Well I'm hopeing that it is one I'm afraid I threw a couple back into circulation before reading about them. I may have kept one other around here somewhere though just because of the tone..
