Pretty nasty trick to pull on you Steven. Quite extreme machine doubling...even for 1972.

I think I'll hang onto this one, I may need a good cry some day. Other than the one I'm having now. Laughing

Steven, Bob, and Coop, this is what I am tempted to call a version of the "zip-bam, thank you Ma'm", that is typical of the tilted E/W, that would have a very short impression time, before the final "hit", to make the strong device. My reasoning, is that the 992 seem to have "slid" into place, from the East. Al being a class VIII strike. I have seen several examples of the same thing, except the tilt was N/S, allowing the faint view, next to the main device.

That 1992D is a rather profound example of die deterioration doubling. Same thing happened there that happened to the 'poor mans double' of 1955 (and other years).

I agree with Chuck. This particular coin shows no indication of any hub doubling at all. Definitely die deterioration.

Bob, and Cd, I guess we can put that one away. I was still a little confused as to the difference, but not any more. I appreciate your help, and infinite patience, because I am a bit hard-headed. Once something finally gets thru, then I proceed to the next item. Many thanks!

Whats funny about deteriorated die cents is they seem to show up for certain years often but seldom on other years.

I always find them from 1989-D, here's 2 of them Rolling Eyes

ED, I agee. I have seen a few tionight, while going thru several rolls. While I'm still thinking abouit it, weigh all the 1983 cents. There are a few bronze "critters" out there! The weight should be 3.11gms. Find one, and be sure to have it authenticated. It is worth big bucks! Five figures.
It is also referred to as "flat-field doubling", according to one of the authors I read today. I have read several books today, and din't recall who said it was that.

Ed - From appearances your second 1989D cent could be a minor class 6 doubled die.

I think it falls into the catagory of ruined by the other issues Crying or Very sad

When I see a minor variety but it has die deterioration or strike doubling I sort of ignore it because the variety is so hard to see and it's overshadowed by the other problems. If you took a picture people would focus on the other problem and get confused.

Back to the pond in hope of a bigger better fish Wink

Ed, Since when do they have "ponds" in AZ? All I ever saw was "horse troughs", and "they ain't no fish in 'em"!
