You might look at this thread:

http://www.coppercoins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2098

It lists all of the types of double dies by the 9 classes used to describe them.

It might not answer your question, it applies to doubled dies not RPMs, your coin looks like it might be an RPM.

RPMs are not doubled in the die making process, they are created when they add the mintmark with a punch to the already made die.

Ed,
I was hoping that starting that thread would be of some help with the photos and your listing of classes 1-9 maybe it will be used quite a bit to help others.

Ed, I think he is referring to the "(apparent flat-field doubling effect, just above the horizontal bar of the "4", (upside down)).
Esconels4, I don't see any doubling on the "41". I think you, like me, use way too much magnification. I can go to Digital 800X, but who wants to see if their great-grand father had un-trimmed fingernails? My suggestion, (and others have commented on this same thing,) would be to use a max of 60X, and that is too much! BTW, It "ain't yore peepers"!

It's a tough one.

My guess is that it has some mechanical strike doubling because as you outlined the date has a mechanical strike doubling and the S is also doubled.

If the coin was a doubled die then the mint probably would not be doubled from it since the mint is not punched until after the die is made. So it looks like strike doubling and it shows on the date and S.

But the reason I say it's a tough one is the S sort of looks trippled so it possibly could be an RPM and it's also strike doubled.

There are 2 distinct types of S used on 1941. The pic is good but I still can't be sure if this one is large or small. If you have a few 41-s put them side by side and you will see the differances, once you know large or small look again at the listed RPMs and realize with the strike doubling it will still be confusing.

My GUESS is yours is the "small" mintmark but it's tough to tell.

I'm saying that because it's chunky and closed and the lower seriff seems to go down further than the large ones but I'm not 100% sure.

By knowing large or small it just eliminated some of the possible RPMs that are on large ones. After that you could try overlaying then it might be obviouse if it matches one... Maybe Steven or Coop could try it Smile

Maybe someone else will chime in on the size? Laughing

I AGREE WITH YOUR DEDUCTION EA ON THE LARGE S THE ENDS ARE SHARP AND POINTY THESE ARE ROUNDED. DONT KNOW HOW TO OVERLAY THOUGH. BY SIGHT I COULDNT MATCH IT THOUGH.
