This makes me wonder how this could possibly happen. How could the I get in front of the B in liberty. I assume the B is missing due to grease in the die. But how does the I end up where the B belongs?

Probably some after mint damage smashed the I and B from the west going east and left their smashed metal as that blob then it circulated and got worn and toned and looks like that 
Maybe that line below is a scratch from the same thing that damaged it.

Well that makes sense, but wouldnt there be a sizeable scratch showing where the I used to be?

Looks like there's a mark where it cleanly scraped/sheered the I away... The blob is probably the remains of the B, that's why it's anchored there still.
You could probably take a screwdriver against the I and tap it and if hit just right then toned up for many years it would look like that.

Is the scratch to the east the one you are talking about? if so wheres the scratch fom the letter being pushed over by some device? unless its been wore down over time where any traces are unnoticable. Have you seen something like this before? Just curios I'd say your answer is correct but just didnt make sense at the time. The other thing i came up with is possibly grease covering the I and a portion of the B. But i dont know. Here's a better picture.

From that angle it does look pretty clean where the I was but still think it got sheered off then worn smooth from circulation. Just seeing that scratch below looks like after something smashed the letter it made that scratch below.
Sometimes damage looks like it would take a very lucky hit but then out of a lot of coins there are a lot of chances for strange damage then circulation blends it in.
In other posts where the 1941, 1942 have slanted 1s which are from damage maybe as the coin ejects or strike those often wear to look like they were not damaged. I've found several. But because of the nearby scratch on this one I think it was after the mint. Still a conversation piece.

THANKS ED, IM GONNA SET THAT ASIDE JUST FOR LOOKS. WHAT YOU SAY IS TRUE ABOUT THE DIFFERENT ODD DAMAGE, NEVER SEEN TWO THAT EVER LOOKED THE SAME. THANKS AGAIN.
