Hi
While playing with my new 'toy' QX5 ..I found this cent and it
appears to have an extra eye (at least thats what it looks to me). What do you think?

It's neat looking but from what I see in the pic I think damage. Just a guess... it got hit and raised the area around it like a ring around a meteor crater.

It does look like an eye but not like Lincolns eye, it looks like a closed eye.

I think what Ed was saying is that the hit/damage broke through the plating and air reached the Zinc underneath and started raising. Kond of like the stretch marks on the mintmark area. Most of the time the damaged plating rises or falls as the air reaches the zinc in the planchet.

Yes Coop!

The zincs all get pimples. Laughing

Even the little tears in the plating around the mintmarks that they're born with eventualy corrode and the minmarks fall off or they grow new things that look like mintmarks in other places.

I do metal detecting. I dig up nice old copper or wheat cents but the modern zinc ones become a grey blob in a few years, after that they crumble to dust even in dry Arizona.
