My first ever 1970S small date from change...
Just found it ten minutes ago while going through a jar of cents I bought at face saving them from the Coinstar.

Hi CD,
How do I tell which is small or large date in the 1970 S cent?
What's the difference between the two? I 'm trying to complete my album with missing cents I need.
Thanks.

I usually look at the lower loop of the 9. On the large date it points down toward the mint mark and on the small date it curves up to be nearly horizontal.
There are some who prefer to look for the lack of a crease in the 7.
I've always wondered how many of these are out there. I believe most got into circulation before they were discovered and few have been retrieved. There were about 200,000 included in mint sets and this is the source for most of the ones seen.
Mint set small dates are rarely seen unattributed any longer and a large and growing percentage of them are damaged by the plastic they are packaged in.

So far I'm at 11 BUs cherrypicked at shows, and 5 proofs with 3 of them being in full sets.
I have never found one in a BU roll.
This is the first I have ever found in change.
Chooksey - The best method....buy a small date that's attributed and hold it side-by-side with a large date and compare them. Look, look, and look again until you know the difference. This is what I did, and I can now spot a small date easily.
