Hi All,
Have a question about the 1969-s Lincoln cent, in Chucks book on page #263 he talks about the 69-s and that many novice collectors have found machine doubling and thought it was the super-rare doubled die. So I will do my best to tell you what I found to day because I do not have a camera I might add I found this with my stereo microscope. It has clear doubling on the outside of the first 9 and clear boubling on the inside of the 6 in the date. on the mint mark it looks like there are two S-mint marks on top of each other, however the word liberty shows no doubling that I can see. The picture in Chuckes book of the RPM for this cent looks nothing like the one I have and I don't know if we have a picture of the rare one here so my question can you have machine doubling and still have doubling on the mint mark AND THE DATE ALSO and could any one please post a picture of the rare s-cent, and one of the cent that I have described if we have one sorry for the long post but without a camera it's hard. Thanks BRUCE

Bruce: Sorry I don't have an image of the real deal. I've seen one in the doubled die book. But I think it is very rare.
As for your coin. The hubbing set up for the dies are seperate from the mintmark process. (Mintmarks are added at each mint D & S by a punch that makes the letter) So when the doubling is found on the date & the mintmark it is 99% of the time machine doubling. There are a few ddo/RPM combinations on the date and mintmark, but very rare and they usually are in different directions. The 1968-69 years are loaded with machine doubling. So I'm guess that yours is machine doubled. Machine doubling can be just on one letter/number and on one or both sides of the coin. Usually on the outside edge lettering/numbers. Rotated by a loose machine than when tightened the problem is fixed. Thus the term machine/strike doubling. Not a true varieity as the die is not doubled, the maine created a doubled image or I like to call them a smeared image with no splits on the ends of the letters/numbers and always in the middle of the letters/numbers.

That would be very normal to have the strike doubling on the date and mintmark.

The fact it is on both in most cases means it is a strike double, they are super common for that year.

The real 69-S ddo is nice, not just the date but everything is nice. Here's a link to one on Ken Potters site:
http://koinpro.tripod.com/Articles/1969SDoubledDieCent.htm

here's a typical strike doubled 69-s

Coop, you got that right! Arizona boys tend to help each other, whenever they can. Abouit a lunch, It would have to be someplace where everyone could go, without having to make a "cross-country trip"! Maybe Blythe, CA. I don't know off-hand how far it is to Blythe from PHX, but from here, Rialto, it is 176 miles. Not the best time during hot weather! It would be nice to have a small "get-together", and meet some of the members in person. No use seeing the "Eastern Dudes" having all the fun!
Back to coins.... ED made mention that if some one has some coins that they would like to swap for others, etc, that would be an opportunity to do just that.
