On several reverse 1960 D, column 12 has a die break(I presume) but in the open field to the right is a piece of copper that has no place. Can anyone identify this? Thank's

Rhubarb, From your comment, and the photo, I ask, is/are the piece(s) in the field attached, (to the field), and, if they are loose, do they fit the areas where there are , ( looks like) pieces missing?

If it's not a loose piece and you see several with the same exact thing in the same bag it's probably a die crack along the column. In the field it's probably either more of the same cracking or a die gouge or damage.

The piece of copper is attatched. I have tried to remove it with a straight pin. It's out there all by itself and I haven't seen a listing with this under the 1960 D variety on the main website. Just curious about what it may be. I do beleive it may be a die crack. I just don't know.

I wouldn't use anything but a q-tip or you can/will damage the surface of the coin.

The reason you won't see it listed is only varieties get listing numbers.
This would be a minor error not a variety.
The only time you see cracks listed is if they are on a variety they are used as markers to help you ID them.
The reason they don't number errors is every error is a bit different. You might find a few the same in a bag but the same die would not have that crack in an earlier state. The numbers refer to a specific die that had a variety (DDO or RPM) from the day it was made. In some state during it's life it might also get a crack so they list that to help you ID the variety and the die state.

what you have there is a error coin. It isnt a die variety just a normal die chip or die crack.

Ed, you are right about finding several in the bag's. I will post a picture of the D when I can get a good pictue. A minor error is a good thing when I am still trying to learn this hobby.

A word to the wise, Rhubarb! Be careful when you go "fishing" around in the bag for the last of the batch! You will find slivers of copper, (Cathy will verify that!). She got one in her finger!
Are there any indications of a die crack/break in that area?

You may want to check the MM on this one. I have a few that are RPMs with a large die crack in this location.

Steven,
You might tell which RPM number if you remember.
That is always fun for new variety hunters. Once in a while you see the marker before the variety. Most often you see the variety then find the marker but it also happens the other way. You see a big marker and look for the variety that goes with it.

I haven't found a RPM yet for this marker, I'm still searching for answer's. I'm new and only have this website for info.
Dick, I thank you for the warning, I will keep a tender nerve on standby for the sliver. I get sliver's all the time.(man they make you talk in foreign language)
Thank's for the help guy's.
