I have a coin that has crud around the rim. I would like to know what would cause this.

Might be from grease along the die edge leaving a void in the edge of the coin. Or even from a damaged or rough planchet before strike. (the crud is incuse not raised right? or am I misleading the picture)
I see a lot of stuff from the 60s that still has grease along the coin edge.
Also it looks like your coin has an incomplete rim. The rims are made before the coin is struck. Often minor clips or planchets with a ragged edge would also have an incomplete rim. They make the rim in an upset mill that pinches the blank between rollers. If part of the edge is missing it can't get pinched to make the rim rise up in the side where the clip or ragged edge is so that side and the opposite side will have an incomplete rim.
Just a swag! Look at the opposite side (probably the rim above the date area on your coin) to see if it is incomplete, if it is incomplete on both opposing edges then that coin had a clip or incomplete planchet.

I agree with all the above, and don't think it is what it appears to be. Are there more of the same in the bag, and are there more areas like that on the coin? Also, are they on the same side?

Looks like planchet damage to me. If it were a crumbling die or a beginning of a cud, that area would be raised instead of sunk into the pattern. Probably a seperation of the material on the rim. (Lamenation peeling) If you only found one of these in the batch, it an error. Finding more of these in the same area would be something else. But I'm betting this is the only one.

Was this the only one found? I got a roll of 1937-S Cents with many having a mark in the same area. It looked like die wear, but it was on several different dies coins, but looked the same from coin to coin. So know if this was the only one found would rule out lamation peel if more are found. It could be grease or something no one has thought of yet. So keep us posted.

Dick, this is the only one I found so far. I have retaken the photo as Darrell recommended, maybe this is a better photo.
