the hubs that are used to make the dies at the denver mint are also used for the P mint to am I right? It is just that the D is removed especially for 1997 thru atleast 2000?

I think someone said the P ones were not all made with the D on them.
But I think I know what you're thinking.... there are those P ones in those years with phantom Ds you can barely see but I think those ones are the few made that way. A good example is some of the 1998 plains with the type 2 reverse have a nice phantom D on them.
I'm not sure about this but I remember hearing it someplace here on the forum. You might find it if you search old posts.

I have not heard of one, do you see it on one you have?
On the 1998 type 2 there are several different dies so some have it but others don't.
For the 1997 double ear there should only be one die so if you see it on one you should see it on all atleast in the same die state when it's not polished away.

then if it does have a phantom D that means the hub that made the die for the double ear in 1997 came from the denver mint.
My question is why hasnt there been any double ears found on the 1997D lincoln cents?

The hubs with the phantom D didn't come from the Denver mint. The Philly mint created all the hubs with the D, sent some to Denver, then ground off the D for the rest of their own production. Some of the hubs used in Philadelphia had traces of the D remaining.

So does that mean that every hub in those years had the D (then they removed them for all P coins) or was it just a few that they removed them from in a crunch to get more P hubs?
Maybe nobody knows except the hub makers....
I did find the old post where we talked about it:

I could read back through my literature, but I do believe they all had it - and it was removed for use in Philly.
The use of a master "galvano" stopped many years ago, but they do still use a master copy of the original 15" engraving made of epoxy. It is in this that the mintmark is placed...or so I believe. This would mean the master dies have the mintmark, and the working hubs have it. It's the working hub stage where it is removed before making working dies.

Excuse My ignorance but is there only one hub that makes a die or is there many hubs?

Darrell - Simple put, this is how it works
1 A master HUB makes one or more master DIES
2. A master DIE makes many working HUBS
3. A working HUB makes many working DIES.
4. A working DIE makes many coins.
For dies, both master and working, that were made before the single squeeze process, more than one different hub (depending which type die was being made) may have been used. For all dies using the single squeeze process, only one hub was used.
