I don't want to sound like the ultimate newbie but can someone please tell me what all these initials and numbers mean that you are talking about in regards to varieties? DD is double date, I can figure that one out but beyond that I am lost on what your talking about and I am starting to get interested in this aspect of collecting. some of the coins you have been showing are really neat to look at and its things I haven't noticed up until recently. There is a whole new world of collecting out there that appears to be something I might enjoy but I dont understand it.

That's a good question. And the reasons you give for developing an interest in varieties are very good as well!

Some abbreviations that come to mind:

DO (or DDO)= Doubled Die Obverse (not "Doubled Date")
DR (or DDR) = Doubled Die Reverse

OM (or MM or OMM)= Over Mint Mark (D/S, S/D... must be different letters)

RPM = Re-Punched Mint Mark (D/D. S/S... must be same letters)

That's all I can think of at the moment.

Chuck, you might want to create a page that answers this very question.

The numbers come from different cataloging schemes.

For example, the King of US doubled dies (1955 cent) can be listed as FS-021.8 (Fivas/Stanton) or Breen-2214.

I know there are others, but those are the only two I'm the least bit familiar with.

Thanks for the responses. I don't feel that out of the loop now.

BTW, awesome link. I saved it in my favorites for future reference.
