For those of you not familiar with the Sullivan brothers of WW II, here's the tragic story. All 5 brothers were from Waterloo, Iowa and htey joined the Navy after Pearl Harbor, provided that they be stationed together. They were assigned to the USS Juneau. The light cruiser was sunk during the battle of Guadalcanal in 1942, back when we weren't winning the war. All 5 brothers, and about 700 other men died.

There was a movie based on this called "The Fighting Sullivans". I have seen it and I thought it was good.

There was also a song by an alternative band called "Carloline's Spine" that respecfully honored the Sullivans and especially their mother. I used to listen to that song on a small college radio station that no longer exists. I really like that song.

(Bonus points for non-vets or people under 40 who know what the gold star/ blue star reference means.)

The song was #23 in the Billboard charts in 1999. They even played the song live on the "Big E" (aircraft carrier USS Enterprise)!

This kind of stuff gets to me.

The elementary base school on Naval Station Yokosuka Japan is The Sullivans School named after the brothers. Both my sons went there when I was stationed in Yokosuka.

I have always had a high amount of respect and admiration for veterans, especially those who gave that kind of sacrifice. I wonder if any of them were honored posthumously?

I also wonder if there were any window flags at that time with five stars on them? Most I ever saw was three.
