I still don't have a good explanation or a book to read. It is very difficult to look at older, especiall 1910 thru present date not knowing or not understanding(probably both) the principle's of how does notching occur.

Rhubarb,
Here is a link that shows notching perfectly. The article is kinda iffy, but the photo shows what you asked for.

David, find a cookie-cutter, and some play-dough. The cutter should be long, and narrow, if possible. Cut a "cookie", then raise the cutter, (while still in place), turn it to one side or another, and make another cut. It doesn't have to be all the way thru, but enough to show the two forms. They will be rounded, and should show a "notch" where the lower parts are om the surface. This will show how the doubling looks, and is formed.
Then do the first step, but only partial cut, and move it sideways, so it leaves a flat surface. Now you have Machine, or shelf doubling. Hope this makes sense! Good luck!

Thank's Bob and Dick, I will try the cookie cutter. After the last time I was in my wife's kitchen she wanted me committed, heck she might call somebody for an appointment this time. lol
