Ok here is one that has me going huh! at first i thought it was a mark on the plainchant but i have 5 of these with the exact marking so that blows that idea out of the water.
anyone see this before and what would it be as far as die scratch or gouge or even a break?
thanks again
Gary

Gary, those marks are the straight lines on the jacket, lapel, etc. It is a clashed die. I have one in my box. I was going to send it to Bob, but changed my mind. The post by Bob, recently with the statue holding a spear, or club in his hand, is the same thing.
Check Stevens overlay, in E.C.Q., 2/20/2007.

Gary,
Those 'striations' are on the die and probably occurred during the tooling process. You will see them to varying degrees on a lot of coins. Basically, just long die gouges.

I agree with Bob. I come across a lot of these where the planchet or die gets dinged, gouged or scratched before striking. Yours is a classic result. Nice.

the only way all will learn is to post questions so that all are on the same page. I've seen these die gouges before on different reverses like that. always catch my eye though.
