This 96 plain has some abrasion or erosion but it also has very thick tops of the letters on the motto. Mostly on the E and TRUS. Is the widening just from the abrasion/erosion or something else?

My guess, it's not a ddo but what do you think?

ED, may I join you in your quest to find out "what's going on here"? I have several of these, different dates, also, and didn't think it was enough out of the ordinary, to make an issue of it. Now that you have, lets both find out!

This is what die wear looks like on the more modern coins. The older copper cents had more of an even die wear, which is why some of this may look somewhat confusing.

Thanks Chuck.

I thought the same, mostly those lines to the rim in the direction of flow were the clue.

Thanks Chuck, and ED. I noticed that this was occurring on the "zinc coinage", and was wondering.

Just a little note on this affect. At first, trails were thought to be a function of die wear, but one of the big give aways between the two is that die wear lines are radial while trail lines are singularly directed (some case of trails, but very few, have two closely associated directions)
