Washington Dollar errors already showing up

Coin World had an article showing pics of "doubled" edge lettering and mentioned someone finding coins without any edge lettering. And one pic of a "dropped letter" in the edge lettering.

Variety collectors will be having a field day!

They should be thought of as errors not varieties.
The reason is the same die pair can come with or without it and it would be like an incomplete or double rim or reeding defect. Wink

Lets see if the hype market transforms these errors into rare varieties like they did by calling die gouges on quarters extra leaf varieties instead of everyday die gouges. Question

The plain edge 2007 dollars appear to be no rarity. Hundreds of them have suddenly appeared on eBay and they are selling like hot-cakes (over $100 each). Now - it is a great error -- not having the "In God We Trust", "E Pluribus Unum", date, and mintmark on the coin. But if they exist by the thousands (as they surely must) - are they worth the kind of money they are selling for on eBay? I'm not buying one at those prices (which probably means it will be worth a grand in a year).

The double-edge lettered coin in the CW article (two complete sets of edge lettering) is not showing up on eBay - so it is probably going to turn out to be pretty rare. Billy Crawford showed me the full-size photo of that coin (which, btw - managed to get printed in Coin World without proper credit) - and it is really a cool error. Both sets of letters are the normal depth and it makes the Latin look like Greek -- pretty funky.

I wasn't goimng to waste my time on the NEW dollars. I don't like them. They are like the others, superfulous! Get rid of the paper $1 bills, and recall all the old version of the bills, then think of a way to make the DUMB ideas they have come up with. I'll add another "dimb" idea to the lot. Make $2, $5, $10, $20, and $50 coins. One won't have to carry a wheelbarrow full of clunkers to buy a few odds, and ends.
If I can find some "D mint coins, I'll check them, and see if they are okay. If so, I'll trade them for a box of cents!
It won't make any difference if they forgot the rim writing, we still know it is a 2007! "Philly Blows it again"!

just heard on the radio that there could be as many as 50,000 coins with out the edge.

David, If we wait a few weeks, all those "eastern dudes" will tell us. They seem to be the only ones getting any "Philly" types!

I have just noticed all the hype about the missing edge lettering. I happened to be at Harlan Berk's in Chicago today. Tom DeLorey told me he has seen many of the errors, but the store did not have any in stock.

Similarly, I checked Fred Weinberg's site and he has none. There are quite a few on ebay and only a handful certified, two at a minimum bid of $399. Others are raw.

Someone asleep at the switch at the Mint again. How do people expect to get dollar bills replaced by coins if the quality control and the marketing and distribution processes are failing. Does anyone care over there?

I've got the perfect eBAY sale item once the Adams Dollars are released in a few weeks. I would sell them as Washington Dollars with someone elses picture on it. Gotta be worth a bunch!!

There is a big scam on eBay selling the "Up-side Down Lettering" error they call it.... and rare they say! I saw these coins going for $50 each.

I asked Bill Fivaz about it, because I was finding more than half of the $1 Washingtons in rolls here in Las Vegas with lettering upside down, and I suspected it was a random process.

Here is what Bill wrote me -

Dennis: Coins with the missing inscriptions on the edge are showing up all over the place, here and elsewhere. In my opinion, they're a $50 coin AT BEST.

The edge lettering is put on the coin AFTER striking and is a random thing - depends how the coin enters the edge lettering machine. Neither is rare or even scarce. Just a big hype.

It's actually a "Type"..... and I am finding about 68% with upside down lettering.

On the article i read it said the side lettering replaced the rimming process but im sure Bill has the heads up. Also they are being made on new equiptment and the mint said it just needs a bit of fine tuning lol
