John, this is a rough one.
1. Looks like there might be a die clash, on the neck, below the ear.
2. Beyond the point of the raised ridge ring, from the "N" in IN,
to approximately the "s" in Trust, an area in the arc of about 60 degrees, including the profile, is a large amount of damage ,that could very easily be caused by MD, or ED, (ejection damage), or a combination of both! The remaining 300 degrees appear to be free from any damage, which would rule out MD, therefor my conclusion is, severe Ejection Damage. I doubt there is any damage, as such, on the REV.

Good one!

Looks like stairs on that E!

I'm guessing.... it was die wear/abrasion doubling Question

Aaron, I have seen photos of that kind of damage, but don't recall where! I was checking the "Plaid Book", but supper arrived, and naturally, the book has been set aside! I'll keep looking , LATER!

I like that coin it looks like its been struck 4 times wonder if it was stuck during ejection and restruck but you would think other damage would appear from blanks trying to enter the press

Just to throw another question or two into this one. Any thoughts about these extra views?

I still think it's abrasion doubling.

A good example is the 1971 that was listed as DDO Die-5 FS-030.7. That listing was removed when they decided it was abrasion. (but they still often sell for a lot)

If you see that 1971 it did similar things. On the date and RTY the abraided image is to the north but on the vest it's to the east. On the mouth it made what looks like teeth. The reason I say it's similar is the direction is not a fixed direction like a DDO. On your coin the E abrasion went west, the D abrasion went north. Most abrasion doubling coins will go to the rim but can go other directions where the die flow is moving out and away from the letters or portrait causing different directions.
That's my theory.... Rolling Eyes

BTW the D also looks like it has die trails but I don't think that's what it is.

Well I hope we hear what CD thought when he saw it.

It could be a combination of abraision, and post clash damage, which might have caused micro cracks to form. Repeated "stroking" in the minting could cause these cracks to become chips that broke off the die, and leaving the odd marks we see. Just an opinion.

Looks like die gouges on the D and the WE as it looks like someone tried to clean the die with a sharp instrument other than a wire brush. They may have been trying to remove debrie or grease and deformed these letters. If you found this in a roll, there should be several of them if the die is deformed as it will keep making that error over and over. If on only one, (which I doubt) it may have been debrie on just the one coin. But some type of error and not a variety.
