I received my 1956 D and S from John Wexler yesterday. Comparing it to the NGC MS64 1956 D RPM 1 and RPM 8, I believe it is at least MS64 red. The lustre on this one is a little nicer that the other two. Here are a few photos. The obverse clearly shows what may be the S mint mark

The reverse has a die line that extends from the top of the left wheat ear thru the top of the U and the bottom left of the N (in UNITED)

There are also some polish lines in there

Now compare the second photo to my AU version of the D and S below. There clearly is a die line in the same position.

And here is the obverse of the AU version of the coin that may be a 1956 D and S from a previous post. This seems to establish they are the same coins.

Garry,
In my opinion, they are the same coin. Any time you have die markers that are exact, the chances that they are the same die are greater. To me, I have no problem seeing the S mintmark in your AU example, but others seem to have a hard time seeing it. I did a little work with rotating the picture of your AU example and placing it next to the pic of your new coin. Everything pretty much matches up. The reverse die scratch is exact. There is no doubt in my mind that we are talking the same variety here!

Thanks, Bob, I wish I could get a better photo of the one John Wexler sent me. It looks virtually brand new. Wheat cents really look nice when they are full red. It really is amazing
