I have a few Questions!

Okay David - just a preview of what I am sending to you.

1909 Master hub was made from a galvano. The master hub made a master die, which made working hubs, which make working dies.

1910 The master hub had the 09 removed (1909) which made a master die, which had the 10 placed into the date, which made a new master hub for 1910, which made a new master die ............

This process was continuously repeated up until the 1950's when changes were made. But this you will see in the disc.

That sounds about right.

In 68 the master was showing signs of being old. I don't understand how masters are re-used or replaced or why each year when they change dates everything is not new, if they made a new galvano then made masters it seems like every year should be a fresh start but I've never seen a 68 that looked fresh. The 68 cents all seem to be closer to the rim than others.

In 69 they changed everything so everything started out new and slightly different.

So my question is if they make a new galvano every year when they change the date or do they re-use a galvano and change the date somehow when they make the master hub?

Also if they re-use the galvano how do they add the date to the master?

New galvanos were made in 1909, 1969 and somewhere in the mid 1980's (evidence points to 1986) a new galvano is made for each year.

The proces of making a new mastre die for each year before that was fairly simple. The previous year's master hub was used, the last two digits were then abradede off and a new master die was then made with only two digits in the date. The last TWO digits were then punched into that master (that is why we see some master die doubling on the last two digits of the date) and a new master hub was made from that die, In actuality, it appears that in some years, the Mint may have made more than one master die in a particular year (with just two digits) for use in other years, but that is speculation on my part.

This pratctice was brought to light by none other than Charles E.Barber in a series of letters concerning this matter.
