Very good article in Dec 15 Coin World. The SS Republic sank in a hurricane in the Atlantic (off the Georgia coast) in 1865, taking with it gold and silver coins. The company "Odyssey marine Exploration Inc" has been undergoing salvaging operations for months. They have recovered >750 gold and >900 silver coins.
Gold are 60% Coronet head $20 and 40% Coronet head $10 coins.
Silver are Seated Halves.
Interestingly, they report many different dates and mint marks. They also say the coins are in nice shape (not pitted, as often is the case). Some even have some mint luster.

Just curious as to whether or not a find such as this will affect the markets in any way??? I heard alot of rumors concerning this when the "Ship of Gold" was found and it did not seem to have any affect on the prices of some of the coins.
I would think that alot of the way in which the finds are presented to market would have the most impact.....
What do you think?

I agree, the Ship of Gold exhibit was considered a good piece of marketing at the time. Virtually everything sold off quickly. It was interesting that only a handful of dealers were interested in participating. One of my local dealers at Glenview Coin in Glenview IL. said he was approached to handle some ingots and double eagles but he passed on it. I may be wrong, but it seemed that the price of generic 1857-S double eagles did increase as a result of the find. Am I wrong?

Got the Feb 2004 COINage in the mail today. There's a very good article on the history of SS Republic in it.

If you look in Don Kagins website, he has a number of half dollars for sale from the SS Republic all in the $1,000 - $2,000 range. The gold, double eagles, sell between $6,450 and $16,500. I'm surprised the silver survived. Any comments?
