That is correct. Seem like they have been using a lathe or something to scrape off the edge lettering. The only problem with that is that the copper core will show. I believe there are other methods being used as well.

That is what I first thought but I saw graded no letter ones (PCGS and NGC) and most have a copper clad streak.

Just my guess.... these are clad not plated but the edge machine presses and rearanges the edge surface metal hiding the copper layer so if it misses the edge machine the copper is clearly there.

If someone has a real one please post a picture, I'm sure a lot of folks would like to see it.

See these CU posts, they say the same thing about having copper clad showing even as they find them in rolls. They also show fakes, instead of having straight lines only across the rim they look filed. Interesting! Wink

I did buy one of those Washington dollars with the edge lettering missing from Harlan Berk's. $150. The coin is marked as coming from the Denver Mint. All the news reports I have seen say they are coming from Philadelphia, but the dealer there swears it came from a D roll. The flip insert says it comes from a D roll, so who knows.

Gary, what does the edge look like? Is there any "sharp" edges? Is the copper core showing? They have been found in both mints.

There is no copper core showing and no tooling marks. A very smooth rim. Obviously not tampered with. The guys at HJB would not put up with such a thing.

The article in Coneca online http://conecaonline.org/ mentions Tom DeLorey looking at one of the Denver minted Washington Dollars. I got one of those from him. Tom works at Harlan Berk.

Edit: The April 16 issue of Coin World says that the coins should show vertical ejection marks due to being ejected from the collar.
