I wouldn't say die deterioration as much as standard mechanical doubling. It is a late die state coin, so there is some deterioration there as well.

It is indeed. Some of these old Wheaties's get so bad that you can't see anything between the rim and the tops of the devices. They got their money's worth out of those dies. Now days, I doubt they strike near as many coins with one die as they used to.

The wheats were struck on real metal not the soft crumbly zinc of now days, it must have worn the dies a lot differently.

On the coin pictured above that doubling looks like a good case of mechanical doubling.

Die deterioration would follow the flow to the rim or in all ways away from the details but this one just doubled in one way like typical mechanical doubling.

The deterioration on this one is mostly the lines going from the letters to the rim and slight ghosting above the letters.
