I learned a while back if going to a bank to buy halves to be prepared to buy the bank out. I would take 1 or 2 paychecks and before paying the rent or bills I would go to some small farm bank or small town bank and ask them for halves. They would ask 'how many do you want?' and I would say ALL of them. They would pull stuff out of the closet, behind shelves and where ever, glad to be rid of them. I would bring them home and search, pull the silver and anything else of value and deposited the rest then pay my bills. I haven't done that for a long time. Don't know if it wouyld work today.

Yesterday was "Bank Day" for me. I go around and get what I need at local banks for the weekend. I always get a few sample rolls of new cents plus as many boxes of old circulated rolls that I think I can search over the weekend.
I found 3 boxes of customer wrapped cents at Charlestown & Sellersburg, which are both about 7 or 8 miles up the road, not down the road. I haven't been able to get these at the banks in my town. I have run them out!
I searched half a box last night and found a 2000 Wide AM. Also found a couple minor 2006P ddo's. I throw them in a plastic tube for sorting later. One other thing I found was this "Lunar Gem":

Murph - What surprises me is that the Mint says that the Lincoln cent is supposed to last for thirty + years. That one will not make it past four!!!!
By the way, have you been watching the price of raw copper. It is up around $3.50 to $3.60 a pound again. The main force behind this esculation is of course China and their demand for it.

well today was a GREAT day for me penny wise... A coworker of my wifes knows that i dabble in coin collecting and turned me on to a small auction held in a barn today. I didnt have my hopes too high as there were only about 20 people there and its in a barn! BOY WAS I WRONG. As i first walked in i seen what i had come looking for, nothing special just some hole fillers for my circ set, an old tattered and torn blue Whitman with everything except the keys in it! I walked around a little more and they had a locked case with 15 mercury dimes from the teens, 2 barber dimes, a few buffalo nickels, 2 flying eagles cents, about 20 Indian heads, a blue whitman with a partial set of jeffersons, and some state quarter sets.
Well the auction started off with some old farm machinery and knick knacks which i had no interest in and after about an hour they finally made it to the coin section. There were 4 of us bidding on the coins so i figured i was outta my league. now would be a good time to mention i only had $20.00 in my pocket. One fella walked away with all 15 mercs for $2.00 a piece, another got all of the buffs for $1.00 a piece, as well as the two barbers, the 2 flying eagles went for $16 for both of em(I MISSED THAT STEAL) the jeffersons went for $7.00 to the third person whom also bought all of the state quarter sets.
This is where i come into play. The Indian heads came up and the fella who got all the mercs was super interested in them so we started bidding back and forth. He won the first round for $8.00 and could take as many as he wanted for that price per coin. He took 3/4 of them. Then the second round of bidding began and most everyone else lost interest because i got a 1907 which i think will grade MS60 for $4.00. The third round began and i got lucky again with a $2.00 bid so i snatched up an 1874 and an 1879.
At this point im in to the auction for $8.00 which left me $12.00 for the lincs that i was eyeballing. I was pretty worried about not getting them until the auctioneer failed to even mention anything about them..he just said we have some pennies in an old tattered folder here. The bidding started off at $20.00 but had no takers so he started dropping the price, it got all the way down to $1.00 before i made my bid. As you can imagine the fella who got most of the other stuff bid over me to a whopping $2.00 so i went ahead with $3.00 and then he musta got distracted or something because i won the damn lot for $3.00!!!
Sorry for writing a novel about my first auction experience but im super excited and think i got one hella good deal for $11.00. These were my finds for the day.

That's great Aaron. It's a sweet deal. Auctions can be a lot of fun. My wife and I have been to a few in the past 30 or so years and have won some great deals. And, other times we'll have spent a few hundred dollars and when we got home we'll look at the "stuff" and scratch our heads over it. Just got caught up or suckered into the fun of bidding. Anyway, Congrats on your nice find of the day.

Looking through a few mixed rolls...
Just proves that if you look at any amount of mixed rolls you should still find some of the 06-P DDOs from last years bumper crop.
Found:
A batch of typical 05-P and 06-P minor bars.
2006-P DDR with a bar and tilted extra knees that I don't think is listed, I'll post it seperately.
2006-P unlisted DDO with a very fat TY
2006-P 1DO-006 that's the earliest die state of it I've seen yet, no nose bump and the reverse column cracks just starting.
2006-P 1DO-001 that's the nicest one of these that I've found.
1988-P that's probably a very weak strike, maybe struck through a capped die but I doubt it. I'll post it in the error section.

Every once in awhile you come across a Wheat cent in a circulated roll from the bank and most of the time it is in the 1950's.
However, you get lucky ever so often and find one in the 1930's, but rare is the one that has a variety on it. Pulled this one from a roll this morning.
I am fairly sure that this is 1939P-1DO-002 since that is the only doubled eyelid listed for that date on this site and also CONECA. It is also in the right area.

Nice find, BJ! Looks like it was only used once a week for church donations.
