Found this 88-p on the end of a mixed bank roll, it's nice but got a slight mark from the crimping machine.

It's nice, red with no wear and has no details on the obv. It barely has a date and weak liberty but almost no motto. I thought it might be struck through a late stage capped die (nice if it was) because the reverse is fairly strong but on the obverse it has a slight flat area in the hair so I'm guessing it was a weak strike by a grease filled die based on that but a bit puzzled how the reverse could still be strong.

Any ideas, is it a weak strike or clogged die or struck through a late capped die?

Nice Find & Photo!
If it was a clogged die,
I'd LOVE to see the cent that was struck after this one!
(That is if it transferred the retained die fill)

Very cool find! It looks like to me that the coin was struck through a clogged (or filled) die.

Capped dies the head is usually obliterated with a hint of the memorial outline (upside down) barely visable. Definitety a Strike Through error, likely grease. When I get reset up for images again, I'll try to find one to put an image up for it. I've got a couple ....... somewhere. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Definitely a "struck-thru", and most likely, grease. That goop is pretty thick, but being "liquid", will not compress. I see an awful lot of the 2XXX coins with that.
