The April 2007 issue of the Numismatist hints in an article on page 128 that there might be a 2009-S VDB struck to commemorate Abraham Lincoln's 200th birthday.
What say you all?

Gimmick coin. No personal inerest in 99% of the new stuff they have coming out. Not until they go back to multiple hubbing designs with some relief and artistic merit.

Wondering if 09 will be the last year of the memorial or the first year of the next design or will it be midyear????
Indian cent 1859-1909 (51 years or 50.5 with 09 split)
Wheat cent 1909-1958 (50 years or 49.5 with 09 split)
Memorial cent 1959-2008 or 2009? (50 years or 50.5 or 51?)
Maybe the new design will be a new 2009 Lincoln to celebrate his 200th.
So might 2008 be the last memorial

I don't really care what they come upwith, as long as it involves getting rid of the ZINC Garbage! I agree with Chuck, that the "single-squeeze" should go,. There are too many MN quarter, OIV nickels, and all those bars, wavy steps, trails, etc! Why not go to an artistic coin that we can be proud of? Another "09-S VDB, would be as "bright" an idea as was the "gaming tokens", and the "spousal reverses"!

I really don't give much thought or merit to any of it. There is enought older stuff out there to keep us busy searching, identifing and collecting for many more generations. Sometimes I think the person or people at the Mint who thinks up this stuff also works for eBay.

Im tired of the mint bringing out all of these classic designs and putting them in modern commemorative coins. They always ruin the design, and it goes to show that the mint lacks talent to design new coins...

Gabe, not only do they lack talent to design new coins, they also lack the creativity to come up with a decent design, for the coins! Spouse coins, yuck! Game tokens, like the latest fiasco on dollars. Why can't they use some tried, and true designs to make coinage that we can be proud of. Once the cent goes to another "change", I wonder if it will last long enough to become "collectable"? Putting the MM, date, and the Motto on the edge was the most ludicrus thing I have ever seen. I was just re-reading, and the thought came to me, "what if", Hillary actually became president, they could save money if they just put her on both sides, and be done with it! No more "far-fetched" than some of the ideas they have come up with lately.

I don't think most people care what the designs are as long as it spends. I think the Mint comes up with different designs for us, the collectors. But isn't there a committee of collectors that the Mint meets with and discusses these things? If so, who is representing us? Big dealers, turn & burn em? Just wondering.

Btw, I used to buy the commemoratives every year and my favorite was the Buffalo design. That was a nice coin. Not much before it or after it looked as good.

Rock, when the Silver EAgles came out, I liked the design, and even tho it is Bullion, and marked as ONE DOLLAR,, I considered it worth collecting, and have all but the "W", (1996?). I am thinking of going after the proofs,as well, but that can get expensive in a hurry, especially if I wait much lionger! I hated to see the WL half dollar come to an end, but I guess it was necessary, I don't think the "Peace" dollar is as nice looking as the SE.

I only have one "Westpoint" coin and that is the Dime. But I have turned my interest on mainly Cent varities now. A bunch of stuff to sell later. Hope ebay hangs around when I do start selling. Maybe there will be something better by then?

Dick,
When the Silver Eagles 1st came out I liked them too and bought a couple. Picked a few more different years up along the way and kept them up until about 2002 them sold them. I used to have quite a collection of different coins for a long time. Dansco books complete for kennedy's, jefferson's, washingtons, Had a good start on mercury dimes, Indian heads cents, canadian cents going back to the 30's and a huge collection of world coins. I collected most of the commemoratives, and a lot of proof and mint sets. But the best was my BU roll set of Lincolns 1954 to 2002. Got rid of it all except my Dansco lincolns (rebuilding that now) and am rebuilding my variety collection as well too.

I used to have a lot of different coins, but since I have gone for the varieties, I don't buy on ebay any more. I used to buy the "lots", mostly from only one,or two sellers, because I would get some pretty good coins, and a big batch of wheats. Among the "other coins" would be proof sets, mint sets, morgans, everything in the book. I got tired of getting nothing but "culls from the culls", that I quit buying wheats. I bought a bag of 100 quarters, and two each rolls of "P", and,"D" nickels. The bag of quarters looked like "floor sweepings", and so dinged that I decided never to buy any more of them. The nickels came out the same way! I was pissed, to say the least! I only buy proof, and mint sets from the Mint now. One of the quarters, (2005-D), looked pretty good, and they hadn't been released to the public, yet. Ithought about selling it on ebay, slabbed. I sent it in on the 17th of March, 2005, to ANACS, to be attributed, along with $30.00. I never heard anything from them, and my son sent some coins in, and while he was on the phone with them, asked about my coin. They said it was in the safe, and they would get to it later. But If I would send another $8.00, they would take care of it. I said I didn't know why they needed extra money, that I had sent the money to cover all that. They ssaid in that case they would send it thru normal postal routing. I got the coin, the 16th of JUNE, 2005, and is was slabbed, MS65. I don't deal with that outfit anymore, either! I AM the proud owner of a $30.00 slab, and a two-bit coin! Piece of S..T! I don't mind getting screwed, but a bit of vaseline, would help!

Dick,
I've never had anything slabbed. No desire to unless I won the lottery. In my opinion, it's still subjective, inconsistent and expensive. I've collected coins, toys, baseball cards, comics etc for over 30 years and never felt compelled to have a 3rd party grade any of it. I seldom send coins in for attribution. Most of the ones I find are at most worth 2-5 dollars and after spending $8 or more for the attribution and mailings, well what would be the point. It also doesn't bother me not to be an expert...at anything. I live for the hunt and to learn, not to own it all or to know it all. That would be boring to me. Ebay is a crap shoot but sometimes I like to take the gamble. Sometimes it's 7, other times its craps. I do believe in and enjoy this forum as a symposium dedicated to the discussion of copper (Lincoln Cents). Lots of passion with lots of collaborated experience and knowledge.
My philosophical thoughts for this morning. Gee, I hope I am in the right discussion group for this.........
Later,
Rock

Rock, I'll put it this way: We may not be in the right segment of the forum, but one thing for sure, we are in the RIGHT FORUM!
I agree with you. I don't think slabs are necessary, but that line of thought can be applied to buying a car, as well. Some of us choose, for whatever reason, a car that we can afford, without worrying about whether it is an expensive import, or just a used car, that someone traded in for another, maybe newer, or one that doesn't have so many "dings" on it. I was raised in a poor family, where what ever we could afford was good enough. In those days, there wasn't that much to choose from, even if one could afford it! Try raising a family of four on $5.00 a day. That is what Dad had to do. I never had a chance to "collect" anything. I was too busy being a "kid", and doing what kids do. My Dad bought a "book bank", and tried to save a few coins. He had some IHC, a barber dime, a liberty haed nickel, some buffalo nickels. That was about the extent of it. I still have the bank, (even tho after he had a stroke, and wanted to open the bank, he nearly destroyed it), a barber dime IHC, some buffalos, some mine, and some his. I have never been a"collector", as such, until I joined the forum. I have gathered coins from all over the world, and they went where most coins go, to "feed the kids". While living in the interior of Mexico the first time, I "gathered" up a sizable amount of coins from the Colonial times, from the Reform, (1909), a lot of the State issues, Revolutionary issues, anything except gold coinage. They never interested me, even to this day. Upon my return to the US, the coins went to "feed the kids" while I found work, etc. And so it goes. I am very fortunate that, due to my time in the Navy, (20 years), I have my pension, and SS. I have never had this much gross income in my life! I give my SS check to the wife for household expenses, and she puts hers into her savings. My navy pension covers the monthly expenses, and gives me a small amount, leftover each month to use as I wish. It goes primarily for boxes of cents, (lately, since joining the forum). Before I was buying from ebay, and getting the "most searched culls on ebay". "Wheats". "Now that I'm older, and got more "cents", I buy from my friends, and fellow collectors in the COPPERCOINS.COM forum" There, I can get a fair shake!
Dick

However, back to the main topic of the 2009 Cent. I just wonder if there will be series of them if any at all. For example a 09, 09s, 09s VDB, 09D, and many other possibilities.
