Don't hold your breath.

Starting in late 1999 I bought the commem dollars and halves, and had a pretty good start on a modern commem set. But a couple of years ago I got tired of them and traded them all in on a nice 85-CC morgan and haven't bought anything modern except a mint and a proof set each year to keep up the albums.

I do wish I'd held on to the buffalo commems... but oh well.

Just my two Cents worth.....

Guessing from the history of the Quarters, nickels and Dollars, they may have several reverses to keep the collectors interest. As far as a VDB Cent, they already have VDB on 1918-2007 Cents already. S minted coins will probably be proof Cents. So 2009 Plain/Denver will probably be the only choices for business strikes and S proofs. So the only other alternative to keep in line with their "getting us hooked" would be multiple reverses. Just a guess on what they might do. Wink Wink Wink

I guess I agree with (what seems to be) the overwhelming majority that 3rd party grading is useless on a lot of the coinage we collect. I do have some slabs, but almost all of the biggies I have (72P DDO 001, 84P DDO 001 etc) are still ungraded. The 83P DDR-001 I did have slabbed many years ago as a test to the process, and although it went well, I decided not to pursue that line. It can be expensive and disheartening when you don't get what you expect. I also agree that sending in $8.00 for attributing a $2.00 coin can also be an expensive proposition to some folks. We probably do more attributing in this forum anyway. Some folks like to see their name on the site, and that's not so bad. If people can still see collecting as a hobby, rather than a business, they can have a lot of fun doing what we do.

I just read the Feb 2005 Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial 1-Cent Coin Redesign Act. Interesting, 4 reverse designs released each quarter of the year. What really strikes my interest is the limited quantity of coins minted with the exact metal content of the 1909 cent. I know this has been talked about in earlier posts. I wonder if they will continue to use the single hub process to mint those coins? We know it obviously works with zinc, but will it work with a different content? Will they have to go back and use multiple hubs for those coins? I don't know anything about the single hub process other than what logic tells me. I presume there is no longer a need to anneal the dies to prepare for additional strikes from the hubs. Will this method see it's way back in 2009 for a limited amount of time and coinage?
Just curious,
Rock

I don't think anything will change for 2009. I think they still have the old machines, but they are not in use for current coinage. Be nice to dream about copper planchets, but the cost factor enters in where dreams end. They will probably just continue the single squeeze, zinc core, copper plated juck they have been making since 1982. But I envision multiple reverses. Maybe a wheat, Memorial and a couple of surprizes. But I guess time will tell on this.

From what i read from the congress act even though its is included in th 1$ Presidential coin act. The cents will be made of the same composition of material and in the same minting process of the 1909. But ill believe it when i see it we can only hope

Eric,

If they do those it will probably be some limited edition or part of the proof sets. I bet it will be a seperate limited edition.

Many modern mint gimmics like the satin proof limited edition coins come out and sell out from the mints web page in a few hours and a few dealers make a killing. So if these 2009-s vdb cents come out and anyone wants them be sure to order them the day they offer it before it sells out and goes for an insane price from the dealers.

Just my two cents worth...

Sending us $8 and one coin...let's see...

The post office ends up with at least $4 of it with first class insured mail.

Packaging supplies dealers end up with another $1 for the supplies to mail the coins in. At least a dime goes into paper and toner used to write the letter back telling the collector what they have.

Then there's the hundreds (or thousands) in equipment that eventually has to be replaced. Computers, software, microscope, lighting, printers, digital cameras...write off 25c for each coin submitted in wear and tear of equipment.

We end up with $2.65 for a one coin attribution, which can take up to an hour of our time - that's minimum wage 1970s style. I started work in 1983 at $3.35 an hour.

$8 for one coin? Yup, that's a bit much for a $2 coin, but it barely covers costs on this end. Moral to the story: Just wait until you have a half dozen and send them together. The $5 shipping charge is for a whole package, not for each coin. For a dozen coins that's less than 50c shipping per coin, or $3.50 per attribution.

A little tip...if you search BU rolls and find goodies, you will often benefit many fold for sending in the goodies that come from such sources. Reason being is that in original source material when you find one, you're likely to find a bunch. When you send one in, you can match die numbers to the rest of them. Instead of having one $2 coin attributed you have 10 $2 coins attributed for $3...nuff said.

Can you imagine, maybe they produce 10000 of them, like the reverse proofs. Or only put them in X-number of proof sets, or some in uncirculated sets. If the recent appreciation of limited strike coins says anything, it is buy early and often. And as for this year's proof sets, they are almost at the end of the sales year, and maybe they will limit production like 1999. Any way you cut it, this year and 2009 are banner years to buy mint stuff. Ya gotta hand it to those shop at home folks, they have shown the US Mint how to hype it...

I thought I had commented on the 2009 cent before, maybe it was another string. I dont like the idea that they are using 4 reverses for the coin. Even when they minted the Oregon commemorative half dollars in multiple years they did not use more than one obverse and reverse. Does anyone think that this will be another example of quantity over quality? Market share over quality? I just want a coin I can be impressed with for a change. Its very sad.

Garry... dont hold your breath on this one.

I think that the mint has over the years shown that it has no ability to tell art from junk. They will probably produce a commemorative coin series that will not please anyone here.

Carl, I don't even want to think of what the mint may come up with for the anniversary year of the cent! Actually Abe's 100th year. Some of the "products", so far are just plain disgusting! Some of the designs that would be nice, have been placed on "coins" that will NEVER circulate as such, because of the alloy. Presious metals are nice, "to have, and to hold", but why not make all of them BARS? That is what most people would have, for investment "shape". Now , if some of these were put on coins that will circulate like the buffalo, on a $5.00 coin, or a $50.00 dollar coin, either or both in sizes corresponding to the coinage in current use. The cent=1 dollar, the nickel=$5.00, etc. The design(s) will be as they choose, so , so much for that thought. The changing of the face value would result in a huge profit for the mint, in operating, and minting costs, alone! The fact is that what used to cost one cent, now costs a dollar, so where is the problem? IMHO,
Dick

However, back to the main topic of the 2009 Cent. I just wonder if there will be series of them if any at all. For example a 09, 09s, 09s VDB, 09D, and many other possibilities.

Nice idea to get back to the topic. As for what will be coming out in 2009, I've heard from a reliable sourse in the bars I go to that in 2009 there will be a series of Lincoln Cents. All the 09's, 09S's, VDB's, etc and even an upside down one. On some the reverses will have his wife, his kids, his dog, his tractor, his horse and his Vice President. Then there will be the one with the theater, John Both or whatever his name is, the funeral and lots more. This was told to me in private at my local bar and after only 3 Martinis

CarlB, you should have stuck around for a couple more martinis! That is when they brought out the "girl friend"!
