I have 27 1982D copper lg date cents, and have found that there are several different groups of placement of the MM. Do I have to use one as a "base", and then place the rest in overlays to determine which one is which? Does it make any differemce which one I use for the "base posiiton",'for the whole bunch of positions? ANd the obvious, is there a "prime position", or does it come out in an average "location", taken from the many that have been done?

Dick,
Mintmarks were still punched by hand in 1982, so there will be many variations of mintmark locations. As far as determining a base or prime location, there really isn't such a thing. As long as it was in the field below the date, it was considered good to go.

Bob, I didn't make myself very clear! I'll try again. On the photos on site, of the 1982D-1MM-xxx, I have several with the MM in different places. To identify by those on site, they have to have the MM in the same place,as the photo(s). Correct? Some of the markers are very vague, and w/o the MM, can't be identified with any certany. I can "group", and go from there.

Sorry Dick, I obviously misunderstood what you were asking. Anyway, you are correct. The mintmark position is one of the primary markers for identifying a particular variety. If it doesn't match, then you simply have a different die.
Marker information can be vague and sometimes markers just plain don't exist, so using mintmark positions is essential.

Bob, you hit the nail eight on the head! I took photos, (screen captures), and emailed them to another unit. Then I was able to put them up, and make an outline of the date, and one of the MM's ,(identified by the legemds). Then I identified each one, by comparison. I have 4 major placements, but there are some small differences, even yet. It is crude, but seems to work! I'll have to go thru all of them, again to make note of which ones don't quite fit the position, and set them aside FFR.

Dick: They made thousands of dies with mintmarks each year. With the hand placement, they are in different locations. The only ones with varieties intrest us. The rest are just coinage for the year. The ones with Separation of the mintmark and devices which intrest us. The regular coinage is just that. Coinage. I have saved a few that the mintmark was far South than normal. But again they are just coinage.

Coop, thanks for the info about the ones you said were south. I think I found one so far, and the ones I am ckecking against, are the ones from the site. I can't get the overlays to work yet, but Using the triangulation, method, I can place them very easily. I find that by making "screen capture photos" of the ones on the site, I can make pretty good comparison. This works real well, especially when there are no markers to guide my search.

Coop, can you take a picture of one of the ones you mentioned , (too far south)? I will need the baseline measurement from the left side of the "1", to the left side of the base of the "2" , and give me the two 90 degree measurements, (they are from the bottom serif, to the left side of the base of the "!", and the other to the left side of the base of the "2")? That will give me a "cut-off " point, which will discard any that are below that point. Having that baseline measurement, will give me the basis of my expansion for the location. Thanks,
Dick

Dick: I think the coin was a 1987-D Cent. I thought I had images of the coin somewhere in my library. Still lokking. Still no site of the coin. I found a book of BU/AU I started saving back in 1996-1999. I found one more bar Cent to send to the Eggman. Up to almost a 1/2 of tube to send off to him. My goal is to find stuff that he hasn'g already spotted so far, so he can continue his research. Beings we living in different areas, we eash usually get coins from different dies. But a couple we have both found were from the same die. Wexler listed them as WDDRs. You just don't know where the next find will be. But if you look, they will come.

Coop, I finally finished that batch of '82D's. The large majority are -004's. (see my list, in another area). I did NOT find a -009. I was hoping to find one, to send to Bob.
Later: Coop, I found a 1987D-1MM-013 in my daughters pocket change, today. Also a 1960d, but havd to soak it for a while, to see if it is an OMM, or a nice even edge of crud!
