Stuff like this is fun to run across sometimes. Lincoln must have taken a walk when they made this coin.

Wow! That looks like an Abraded Die variety, like the the 3-Legged Buffalo Nickel, or the 2-Feather variety. Look at the strong abrasive die scratches. Someone just ground down Old Abe. I wounder how many coins were struck from these dies? Notice how the dies scratches are only in the flat field area and not on the struck-up devices - as expected on an Abraded Die.

"No Abe Variety"

What is the date and mint of this coin.... and where did you find it?

David, I've seen some with "Poor old Abe" nearly gone, but there ware no abraision marks. This is much newer, and has to be about as interesting as it gets. I don't think Abe went for a walk, He "escaped"! Nice find. What date? Has to be a "P", cause we don't make "misteakes" like that out west!

It's an 1988 Philly. I put it in my Oddities tube. I've seen Lincoln fading away before but never completely gone like this.

I have a similar one in 1989-P (not sure on the mint. But it was a EDS reverse and scratched like yours. So some bad clashes happen early in a dies life, leaving them scratched/fading and then flatten out. Just the bad luck of the draw for dies.
