Does anyone have some pictures of the Date that will show the crease in the 7 of the date that is a marker for this coin. I have looked at the coins here on CopperCoins and still have been unable to see what the marker is to look like.
Thanks
Jack

Jack,
I think I have some pics that might help. The 'crease' you are referring to is on the large date coins, not the small date. Sorry about the poor quality if the pics, but the arrow points to the area in question on the large date photo. All 1970S large date coins will have this crease in the crotch of the 7, whereas the small date coin does not. If you compare the two pics as well, you can see other differences as well including the top portion of the 0 of the date. If there is anything else, please let me know.

Hi Jack - One other place to look at for a comparison is the upper terminus of the 9. If you look at the small date, that end appears to be horizontal while the large date 9's upper terminus is at a downward angle, point more towards the lower terminus of that digit.

Talked to Frank Trout very breifly concerning large/small date 1970-S Lincoln cents at the last meeting. Will bring in some pictures at the next meeting of both dies.

BJ, to each his own! I look at the small date, and "see" the curl pointing directly at the lower part of the "0". Whereas the large date has the end of the curl looking at the "7". As far as the crease, "never saw one".

The 9 is a good PUP, the SD has an elongated egg shaped upper lobe and the insude curl ends in a point.

The LD has a blunt end of the curl and a more circular ball shaped upper lobe.

Like Dick said the curl ends point in a different way and a lot of that is due to the point vs blunt end.

LIBERTY is weak on most SD and stronger on most LD but only use that as a first check then look closer at the weak ones.

I can see the crease on the LD coins but I've had a tough time to point that out to other people, the key thing about it is the SD has a chunky 7 and the LD has a less chunky 7 and the vertical shaft narrows making a waist or crease where it intersects the horizontal top. The photos in Chucks book show the crease very well.

The SD coins weren't from only one die so some are a bit different but SD coins have ALL of these attributes: pointed curl of 9, egg shaped lobe of 9, chunky 7 without crease, and the top of the date is more level.
