A friend of mine on Coin Talk has this 1980 cent and was wondering what happened to it - I thought it was hammered between two boards others thought it might be a calibration piece. I told him I would post it here. What do you think?

Ed: Is the line near the rim raised or lower than the field? Not sure what this is, but it looks like the rims are as wide as the older pre 1918 for size. If the markings are squashed into the coin, it may have been sanded and removed the details or like you thought pressed with something to distort the details. If the line is raised near the rim, it could be a roll over from a machine or a die issue. But as it is right now, I'm not sure. Maybe others have a suggestion.

Coop -I do not have the coin - the guy said it felt like it was waxy but no wax on it. I am confused about the hammering because the rim looks like a pie crust. Thats not right if it was hammered - everything would be smooth.

I will ask him if the rim raised or lower than the field.

If you get the coin, check to see if that area on the rim is a coating of clear grease. You just need to take a tooth pick and if it moves, then it is clear grease. That would explain the raised area. But if it is waxy looking it was probably polished and it took some off the rim, that is why it looks wider than normal. Looks like post mint damage to me.

Edduns, that looks just like one I have. I sent it to Bob, and he said it had been "hammered". Sure makes it weird looking.

I sent a PM to the owner of the coin - check the coin like coop said - no reply as of yet. Pretty much like everyone agrees - Post Mint Damage.

That is a match with one that I have. 3 different pennies, 3 different people, and the same odd "unique" looking damage. Consensus is that it is post mint, but it sure smells like mechanical damage of some sort. So what type of machine would cause damage like this? Maybe a industrial coin counter? Or probably it just doesn't matter since it is post mint...

There are a few "deaths" (rendering a coin uncollectible) that a coin can take. One is called death by "Coin Star", which refers to the gouges left by many types of coin counting machines.

Another is death by "DRIER" which is the case here. This coin, along with offers, was more than likely trapped inside a clothes drier, tumbled, banged against by other coins a few thousand times, which left it appearing as such.

Definitely outside the MINT damage, although unintentional, I would think.
