Okay ladies and gentlemen, your assigment today is to determine if this is a doubled die or machine doubling.

The coin is a 1964 Lincoln cent, AU quality and in a VLDS condition.

Look at the four photos provided and make your determination. Is it or isn't it a doubled die.

Answer on Monday

Yes it's the big DDR for 1964. It looks like the one in my pics here but the I in America on yours looks a bit less wide, maybe just the die state. It's a tricky coin, looks sort of like a strike issue but it's a real DDR.

BJ, I don't think I am able to see well enough to be sure, but, the only indication is a "possible" notch on the "R". The "C" isn't clear enough.

Looks like a late die state ddr from 64 Coneca number 20_R_II Stage C in my opinion

For those of you who thought that it was a DDR, you are correct. However, there is a quandary for while it is similar in appearance to some of the other 1964 doubled die reverses, there is no exact match. Yes, looking at CONECA die -020, there are near vertical die scratches in bay # 12, but they are more SSE than SSW like in die 20. And yes, there is the die clash through the 19 of the date as in CONECA die -021, however, the clash sits a bit lower on this examp[le than it does for the 21 die.

The last piece of contrary evidence is what I assume to be another part of a die clash on the right roof top.

This is a very strong die marker and looking at the indicators for other strong 1964 DDR, none mention this die mark.

So looking at this die on a whole, we have doubling that affects all the peripheral lettering, both edges of the stylobate, both edges of the Memorial building base and the designer's initials. If this was an earlier die state coin, I would call it a new find, however, the die state prevents me from doing that.

Bob or Chuck, do you want to take a look at this one?

Is it my lack of knowledge about "working" CONECA, or what? I read the "cards", but have never seen any photos, to compare with. Am I missing something? As is, Coneca provides nothing but some notes about the coin, but no visual guides.

Look close at the E and T of cent.

In the E east of the lower part of the vertical bar it looks like the same raised line and in the T going into the lower west corner where the vert and horiz bars meet it looks like the same scratch or small gouge going into that corner.

The one in my pictures is slabbed as FS-027, the CPG calls it DDR-58 but coneca says FS-027 is DDR-20 so I'm guessing the CPG had a mistake by ever calling it DDR-58 (coneca now only lists up to DDR-35). CPG lists it at $250 in MS63 but thats the EDS and both yours and mine are later states.

If the markers I mentioned match it probably is the same as the one in my pics and is slabbed as FS-027 aka DDR-20 or 58?.

It would be a nice one to get on this site! I'd send mine but it's already slabbed.

Dick,

It's like breaking a coded message Laughing

If you look at conecas listing for this one if it's ddr-20 they list the FS numbers (if they exist) then you can see it's pictures in the CPG. They also list pics for their top 100 RPMs that you can get from the link on the coneca page. If the coin is listed on this site and they were sure of conecas cross then you can find the picture right here but not for this one. So you're right, most of the time it's just their description but sometimes you can get lucky and cross it to a picture. Smile

Thanks, ED! No wonder I feel so comfortable with our very own PHOTO site! It lets you SEE what you are looking for, and guides you thru the markers, as well. I love this forum!
I also checked the other site, "Coin, something-or-other, ( Collectors Universe.com), but haven't gotten any feedback yet. I want a place where I can see the "corpus Delicti", not pictures of it, printed in some other publication. I have CPG, and Chucks Vol. II, among others, but our site is way above all others!
