1936 Lincoln-Broken 'R'

If I remember correctly, this is a defect on a working hub and the number of affected working dies would equate to the number of dies produced by that hub after the leg on the "R" was chipped off that hub.

While not scarce, it is still less common than the full "R". As far as value; no premium is attached to it.

Interestingly enough, there are examples of working dies with the first hubbing having the complete "R" and the second hubbing with the broken "R". Take a look at 1936P-1DO-001, 002 AND 003 for examples.

They are not common but I've never heard of anyone giving a premium for it. I was happy to find one as a conversation piece.

BJ and Ed both answered correctly that the broken R is less seen than the full R. However, the master hub used that had the Broken R was used to make many master dies. Since I love to search 1936 rolls, I have seen, and documented at least 12 different dies that had the Broken R on them, including the three major doubled die obverses for the date. The doubled dies were hubbed once with the broken R hub, and at least once with a normal hub. There are examples where only the broken R hub was used. So, there are plenty of them out there, but as stated, less frequently than normal R hubs, and there is no premium associated with them

Thanks for the information. It's not a field I'm familiar with and you all helped greatly. I didn't think there was anything special in terms of premium, it just got my curiousity going. Mike
