Just a bit more added information on the mint mark punch.

There was a flattened area on the other wise rounded punch handle that represented the correct position that the punch should in when applied to the die. The die setter, when making ready to apply this punch to the die, would slip a "mask" over the die face that had a hole in it which corresponded to the location that the mint mark was supposed to be placed. Then with two taps, the first to set the punch into the die, the second, which was heavier, to sink the punch into the die, the die setter completed his task.
