I have found 6 of these so far.. The 6 errors range from a small crack to the cud seen in the pic. Surely there is a big one out there somwhere.! Anyone found one with a large cud?

Just a quick point ; Cuds Have To include the Rim. other than that your coin could be a large die chip or not.also could be a die crack that has exposed the zinc to air thus corrosion ,or not . i can't be more specific based on picture(s). Happy Hunting

Thanks for the correction.. I guess it would correctly be called a die chip since there is no exposed zinc.
Sorry about the poor pics.! Im shooting pictures thru my loop with a cheap digital cammera, so its really luck when I do get a good pic..

It could be a die chip or it could be die damage. Or it could be a die chip caused by an impact, rather than a spontaneous break. The size and resolution of your photo is inadequate for a firm conclusion to be reached.

CP, what you are seeing could also be explained by the way metal(s) react under pressure. It is the same process as when "forming" a "shape" thru extrusion. Thhis is what happens: The high pressure of the "ram, against the metal causes it to get very hot. Hot enough to melt, and then is forced thru a desired shape, for use in another area. The same thing happens to a certain extent, in minting coins, except the "extruded" metal which is forced thru, or into the minute cracks, or breaks, as the die wears, or ages, allowing the metal to flow thru these cracks. The 2007-D cent has a very prominent display of this characteristic. If the "rim" were not there, the head od the bust would seem to fall into many pieces. I have found that this "cracked-head", also will have on the rev, minor wavy-steps, as well. It is crude, but pretty well what happens. Hope this helps.

The metal doesn't get nearly hot enough to melt. It instead exhibits plastic flow. There's also no reason to think that this die would have fallen apart were it not for the presence of the collar. The damage/break is minor and did not compromise the integrity of the die as a whole.

After a 1/2 hour of shooting, I finally got the shot I was wanting.! Still may not be good enough.. Also, this is not the same coin in the original post but very simular to it..
Anyhow, it looks as though there was heat involved in the production of this error.. Notice the white ring around the spot in question, (this was visable on the original coin as well) I also noticed what looks like a little blue temper tint on the blob its self..

Thanks,CP

It appears to be a large die chip. It straddles a die crack, which is something you often see with large die chips.

Many of the 06 and 07 cents have die cracks in that area.
If you look at the 06 DDOs on the site many of them are used as markers. They start small and grow until they retire the die.

2006 1DO-016 is a good example, it's a DDO with trails. In MDS it started without the hair crack but later (but still MDS) the crack shows up. It's fun to find them in different states of progession. See below:

Another neat one is 2006 1DO-006, it has a big bump on the nose but I found other slightly earlier ones (still same die state) that don't have the bump. It tells me these cracks/chips form and grow fast.

These things have been around for a long time, 1955 has many head/hair cracked dies. Even the BIE errors and blobs on dates in the 50s are the same sort of die cracks/chips.

I Have a 2006 with a crack in the same place(or nearly) as the
the 2006 1DO-016.. Im going to have to find it & check it for the markers..
Im a newbie.! so to be sure I understand everything your saying, MDS Stands for - Mint Die State.? BIE is a die crack that affect liberty between the B&E.. Correct.??

Thanks for all the help.. RC

MDS Stands for - Mint Die State.?
(it means medium die state)

A coin can be in any grade or mint state.
The dies that made the coin can be EDS (early die state) MDS (medium die state) LDS (late die state). Some people use more states but on this site they stick to the 3 main states.

The coin you had might be MDS but they probably scrapped/destroyed the obverse die when it got that hair crack/chip so it might never have made it to LDS if it wasn't already LDS.

I finally got several rolls of 2007-D Cents. Almost October and finally got a batch. I've found little so far. The most interesting was one with a large die gouge. I checked several rolls and found only one so far. But I will keep looking. I'm saving the 2007-D Cents that don't have bag nicks on the columns. That thins them out quite a little. Putting back a few good ones and tossing the rest back. I thought you might like to see this one?
