First of all... the coin looks like it could be AU-58 from the pictures. I also would not be so sure of the coins authentisity since it is graded by NNC. The coin is definately one not to buy.

I agree with Gabe.
Even though that coin looks better than most NNC coins it still looks like it had something done to it. It looks sort of washed out. Problem with NNC is not only that they would drop a few grades with other graders but many are also problem coins.
I'd think any problem 55 is worth about $1200-1500 depending on how it looks.

Just adding that same seller listed another NNC 66 red.
66 red is the top pop for these and a real one in a PCGS holder (even a 64 or 65 red) would be so much more $. When I see these NNC ones I think if it was really a 64 or 65 or even a 63 they would have sent it to PCGS or NGC and sold it at a real auction house. Just watch, it won't even get 10% of the price of a PCGS 66 red so why would they sell it that way if it was ok. The problem with these NNC ones is how much do you drop the grade? 3 points? would it be boddybagged for cleaning by other graders? is it fake? It just makes it tough to say what they are.

Ed,
One thing is the 2 listings aren't the same coin. It make's me wonder if the seller was stuck with 2 fake's. I haven't ever heard of NNC before this post.

Cathy, I don't feel comfortable with either of the two coins shown! I would much rather see a "good one' get away, that I thought was bad than be "STUCK" with a bad one that I thought was okay.

I go back to my original statement that I would never buy a coin like that without looking at it closely. If that is a 66 red, I will eat it. There is a mark going in the beard. There are some spots of some sort, maybe carbon, on the obverse under the NN in IINN and on the reverse right of the left wheat ear and left of the vertical line of the T in CENT. The color seems to be more mottled than anything. I bet its brown because redbrown examples seem to have a pattern of blue/ brown toning and bright red around the protected areas of the devices. A member placed a nice photo somewhere on the Forum here of a PCGS 65 red. Its a much better photo than these two are.

Your misunderstanding. NNC means Not Normally Cleaned but done in some other fashion.

The best advice is even when you know a lot about them still try to get a graded one by a TPG that you trust.
There are very good looking fakes and many real ones were cleaned. The cost of grading is small compared to the price of these so even a cleaned one is wise to get in an ANACs holder. That way you and the seller won't need to fight over the grade or deal with returning a bad one and if you ever sell it the buyers will pay more so you get the grading fee back in the end.
I guess the only case where I'd say go ahead and get a raw one is if you want it for a folder and totaly know the coin (and the fakes) and it's got the markers on the T of CENT and you're getting for the price of a cleaned one so you know there will be no surprise if you ever try getting it certified.
I remember just a few years ago you could get a decent one for about $500 but today nothing under $1250.
Saw 3 at a show in August:
Raw brown with hints of red for $1650 (looked nice)
ANACs MS62 brown for $2000 (nice but not as nice as above)
PCI MS65 RB for $8000 (looked nice, I bet it would be a 64RB or better in any holder)
