This caught my eye and I first thought bag mark. Too straight for that I think. Looking closer I see that the left side of the mark is raised slightly above the field and the right side is lower and it goes benieth the N/W serif of the MM. Doesn't make since to me being above the field if it happened as a blank then struck with the design. I do understand this to be damage but at what point. Any thoughts.

In 1989 mintmarks were still added to each individual die. If the mark is sunken into the surface of the coin, then it would have to stick out on the die. Only answer for how this could have happened, and not affect the mintmark is a gouge on the hub. Hub receives gouge, transfers to the die, mintmark punched over the raised gouge line, then transfers to coins as a sunken in line with an unaffected mintmark.

I am not quit sure I agree with Chuck that this is a working hub gouge. If it were, we would see a lot more than this one; I have seen more than a few 1989-D Lincoln cents and this is the first that carries this anomaly that I have seen.
Another take on this is that it could be a shallow strike thru a foriegn object that did not go deep enough to affect the mint mark.
Just a thought.

Thanks BJ,
I think I'll just put it back for future reference if needed.

Now this is an odd coincidence. Take a look at the below picture. Just found this coin.
Notice that both marks (indicated by the arrows) do not affect the numerals. Does it look familar?
I believe it is the same thing that happened on your 1989-D Lincoln cent.

BJ, I am no expert, but I have to say that the ?gouge? was on either the hub, or die, and definitely was there BEFORE the MM was placed.
I have a wheat with similar effects, except it is on the reverse, and involves the "T" in cent. I'll try to find it, and post a photo.
