Welcome daggit,
This may help for a quick reference.
http://www.coinbidders.com/Strike%20Doubling%20Flyer%20-%20PDF.pdf
There is an enormous amount of information on this site to brouse and learn from concerning Lincoln Cents. Ask questions post photos and it gets easier as you go.
As far as posting photos an easy way would be to start a free account with http://i33.photobucket.com/ and load from there.

Enjoy and again, welcome to coppercoins

Steven

Welcome Daggit. You can do a search on the bar above to find a forum about one subject. Certain words work better than a whole line of them.
You can use the die variety search on the home page and view dates/minmarked.ddo/ddr RPMs and us this anvenue to open images that you might need to see.
Feel at home here an ask questions. That is the quickest way to learn.

Hi Coop, thank you. I'm wondering how is a person to tell between fat lettering that is typical for a year and fat lettering that may be caused by a certain stage of die doubling. I'm not sure if I worded that right and hope someone knows what the heck I'm talking about. Rolling Eyes

Some years have largerwider lettersnumbers for example the 2001-2003 Cents. The best way to tell is to compare them to other example of the same year. If they are all the same size as most of the coin you find, they will be normal for that year. A couple examples of different size letters/date is the 1960/1974/1982 with the small and large dates. On the other years the normal ones will all appear to be the same. If there is die doubling (Or a better term Doubled Die) then the date/letters will appear larger or have splits on the corners of the letters/numbers. When comparing other examples for that year you can see if a certain date has the same or is your coin different. Machine doubling will also affect the letters/numbers, but they can be identified with the step or smeared edges of the devices. Even the ear/nose/throat can be affected or even the steps on the outside of the Memorial can be affected. So there is a norm by comparing other examples, you can tell what is normal. Anything out of the normal should catch your eye.

Are you using a scope and a camera or a loupe and a camera? With a loupe and scope it takes a while for your eye to develop. Looking at the different types of doubled dies in hand is better. Sometimes the doubling may be there and your eye has to notice the doubling. after seeing an example of each type of doubled die, then you can find them easier as some are only noticed at a certain angle with the light just so. See an image gives the impression that the doubling will be seen at any angle. When you see the image of a variety coin, the best angle/shot of the coin is used. So other angles may not show as strong. Thus when you are looking you may need to turn the coin a little to see the different light affect. After your "Eye" develops you will notice the difference at any angle. It just takes time to develop. Asking questions is best and other forum threads may help, but having a DDO/RPM in hand helps to get started.

Just re-reading my first post about the same size of numbers/letters: I realized that one factor I forgot to mention is die wear. Die wear can make the devices a little larger, but not major until the VLDS (Very Late Die State) when you notice the field and devices flowing together. I often to refer this to snow drifting. After seeing an example you will know what I mean.

Daggit, welcome to the forum. You ask:
By the way how do you post pics here...(technology challenged)[/img] ,
you have already started getting your answer(s). you "asked". The rest is up to you. All you have to do is read the posts, and they will give you the rest of the info, you request. Coop , (among many others), can give you a course in photography, and how to make it work for you. If this doesn't make much sense, not to worry, I have a little trouble seeing, and a whole lot more, trying to proof-read, afterward. Nor am I a typist. Unless they now qualify two fingers... LOL

Hi thanks for the welcome Rhubarb and Dick. I got the posting pics figured out now if I could master photography I would be half way there...if I found something worthwhile. I have a camera, a loupe and a light you would think I could get somewhere with it. Laughing As far as typing skills I'm still on the "one finger...look at the letters level". Nice to meet you all! If I say "eh" once in awhile...just pardon my Canadian slang. Wink
