I decided to slap a few indian cents from my old collection under a microscope to see what I might find. The only thing of interest came up on the date of my AU 1901 cent. Is this evidence of a repuched date on the '9' and the second '1' ?
Same digit, shot at different angles
I know nothing about repunched dates -- but see it is a 'variety' selection on the Coppercoins search page. Is there some VAM like book that identifies different varieties of Indian cents?

Ken,
I would tend to believe that this is not a repunched date. My opinion is based primarily on the 1 of the date. The amount of separation on the base of the digit should also be seen on the top of the digit, unless it was repunched at an angle. As far as the 9 goes, I don't see anything that looks like a re-punching. I do have a few IHC's with repunched dates. I will see if I can't locate them and post a picture for comparison. The Cherry Pickers Guide does list several repunched dates for the Indian Head Cent.

I just checked my FE & IHC Atrribution Guide Vol 6 (1900-1909) and it does list a Snow variety (S6) for this RPD. It doesn't have a photo but does say: "Noticeable repunching visiable on the right half of the base of the (last) 1. Slight repunching on the 9 visiable on the bottom half of the 9." I would say this coin fits the discription for Snow 6. The volume 6 Attirbution guide has been out of print for a few years now. It has been reprinted as a loose leaf binder that includes vol 1, 2, 3 and 6. Use this link for information http://www.indiancent.com/book.html

Thanks for taking the time to look this up for me. I agree - my coin does appear to be the variety you described. It may be minor, but to me -- even minor varieties (and especially those that have been documented by someone) make the coin more interesting. Thanks again.

Most RPD's do fall in to the "minor" category and sell for little, if any, premium over a normal IHC. I guess that you could say RPD's are the RPM's of the IHC series. The few that are major are highly collectable go a significant premium. Steve
